Yes it do, along with fennel, hyssop, anise, etc etc... Up to 10 ppm thujone (the chemical demonized during the ban which comes from wormwood) has always been legal in the US. According to some studies done, pre ban Absinthe contained anywhere from 0 to 48 ppm but tended to average around 10-12. Once this was demonstrated scientifically, the gov't allowed the sale of absinthe's in the US.

Begging your pardon, but it sounds like you might have been drinking it straight or nearly so, or drinking the Czech "absinth", which isn't absinthe at all. Neither of these possibilities is good...

Overdid it in Prague one weekend with that stuff. Went on a binge and finished off on the green stuff. Don't recall too much after that.... Haven't dabbled since. Eight pints and three double doses of Mr. A and I was toast.

This was a bottle I picked up in Paris earlier this year. This and my favorite cult classic movie on the TV, I was set for the evening.

I always thought about trying it but I've heard to get the true stuff you have to go over seas, besides I always love a good scotch

I like just about anything fermented with the exception of Tequilla. But no, you don't have to go overseas to get something good. Having been to a specialty shop in Paris, you'll find that we have some of the same brands right here that they are drinking there. The most widely availble is Lucid. And there is nothing wrong with Lucid. It comes from the Jade line of absinthes. Its a good intro if you've never had it. You don't have to give up scotch either. My first choice is bourbon but I gladly get around to many other choices too. Just be sure you like the flavor of anise. If you don't, you'll spit it out immediately.

If you do try it, please don't try to drink it straight. Real absinthe runs about 120-140 proof, and the classic way to serve it is 1 part absinthe to 3 to 5 parts ice water. This not only makes the alcohol easier to deal with, but causes the plant oils to come out of solution where your nose and taste buds can experience them to the fullest.
