That range is called the Clay Pit. It's a big hole were they cut out the heavy, clay soil and sent it by rail to build, what was at the time, the World's Largest Earth filled dam; Oroville Dam. Below is two pics, one of the pit, and one of the dam; taken from the same vantage spot at the pit. For any out there who care about trivial things.
