Thanked: 5Hoping to build a grinder.
Team,
Would this be a good motor for a 2 x 72 grinder. And what VFD and or wiring should I use with it , how to go about it and what not ?

electric motor 2hp Marathon
So I have attached another picture of the motor. it looks to be "OPen" and I don't want metal dust to get in , so would this motor be a NO?Last edited by drmccubx; 03-23-2015 at 04:04 PM.

Unless you can shield it, I advise against it. Grinding throws around a ton of metal dust. An open motor with high currents is a gigantic short circuit waiting to happen. Motors like that are meant to be used I enclosures.

Thanked: 49Yeah, unfortunately there is a reason that motors suited for use on a grinder and with a VFD cost so much.

Thanked: 5Well there is always the pully option. But single phase or 3 phase?

That motor requires a Variable Frequency Drive. An electronic speed control which varies the frequency of the supplied current to spin the rotor.

Thanked: 49Kind of a good news, bad news thing, Richard. For our applications, it also arguably requires a sealed case. It would be great if you could find one with both features for that money. Unfortunately, the 1.5/2 hp motor/controller package which I have for my KMG goes for about $900 these days ad I don't see any of the Leeson motors like what have going for less than around $350 new.

Thanked: 5Ok. Sounds like a vfbd is a no go for me . To expensive. So sealed motor unit. 1.5 hp. Pulleys to control speed. I have seen single phase motors at Har freight for 120 with coupon. Single phase though. But that's good right ? Easier to wire single phase ? Then steel . Wheels. Etc .

I have been looking at the WEG W21 motor options these are IP55 rated with Aluminium bodies
K11ALE2W21 is a 1.5kw (2hp) 1 phase 2 pole 3000 RPM ($460AUD local) then add pulleys etc
K12ALE2W21 is a 1.5kw (2hp) 3 phase 4 pole 1450 RPM ($260AUD local)
with a WEG CFW09 or CFW10 VFD 1.5kw (2hp) 1 to 3 Phase ($400AUD local)
so leaning towards the VFD set upSaved,
to shave another day.
