Thanked: 5lets make a grinder. My question is this . Those are specific sizes of steel which is fine. But how would one get the steel the best price ? And how to most inexpencively get it cut to the right size. I was thinking .
steel plate at scrap yard ?

Metal Supermarkets | Buy Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Hot-Rolled, Cold-Rolled, Alloy, Bronze, Copper, Brass, Tool Steel, Galvanized
Is where I ordered my the critical pieces from, I got it cut to size. I ordered tooling arm stock and the metal to make the tooling arm holder and the metal for tension arm from Metal Super Markets.
I got the remainder of the metal for the base and supports from the scrap yard.

edit: Enco also has a good selection of cold rolled flat and square stock. You can hack saw it to length.Last edited by spazola; 04-15-2015 at 03:31 PM.

Thanked: 5cool,there is an metal supermarket in Woburn ma 45 minutes from me. I sent then the pdf on another grinder build forum on straightrazoreplace.com as a reference. Looks like a good for for what I am after. I have the bass plate so that is one piece I don't need. not sure what all the other stuff will cost but its a start.
thanks again

Thanked: 5so , litterally down the street from where I work is a welding place. they have structural steel. I priced out more than enough to make the supports and ,, all minus tooling arm . I may buy that separately since it is more precisely made . . and work around that. all told looks like 90 dollars for the steel I need. I looked at 1/2 inch plate. I figured its thick enough to really make it solid. then my nephew would cut all the pieces to the various sizes I need. then we weld what we need to onto the base. then drill and tap what we need to and so on. its a start anyways. comments ?
I did look into steel square tubing but all the structural steel has a weld on the inside and I would imagine that it would make the tooling arm that is inserted into the steel square tubing have more wiggle room which would not be good ? so , thus. I look at the kmg plans on this site as a better option. instead of taping everything , I would weld everything and then tap the necessary parts for holding the tooling arm, tracking assembly ,etc. ?
the structural steel I priced out is 1/2 inch thick. so that drove up the cost . I suppose I could go with 1/4 inch right ? save some money and still have a very strong unit ?Last edited by drmccubx; 04-16-2015 at 05:05 PM.

I used 3/8" x 1-1/2" hot roll flat bar for the box receiver and
1/2" x 1-1/2" for the tension arm. I used 1-1/4" cold roll for the tool arm.

Thanked: 5that's good to know. now I have to do some math to figure exactly how much to buy of what thickness. though I could just do 1/2 inch thick all around. Now that I am thinking about it I could buy individual pieces and that would be less cutting involved. He said he would/could cut each piece to length that way I don't have to much waste involved. I could go into his place with this plan / parts list http://straightrazorpalace.com/attac...nder-plans.pdf or I could just copy and paste on one sheet of paper what I need and go from there. I am trying to think what is the easiest , least effort to get the pieces needed ?

Thanked: 5Ok, first step done. I took the steel I bought. Went to my nephews shop and we cut everything to length. I am using the above kmg plans as a "guide" . So far so good. beautiful clean cuts. Next will be to cut some of them to the correct width and then post pics of what was cut . After that to do some welding and or drilling holes . buy pillow block bearings , shaft and what not . I will post pics when the first big step is one. but for now , a great first step . the plans above really help .

Thanked: 5
I will use 1 or both as a bass for the shafts that holds the tooling arm. They will be welded to the bass plate "not shown" the bass plate is 20 inches by 18 inches and 3/8th inch thick.
I have a question about this shaft off the motor. Is it considered 7/8 th's or 3/4 inch ? From the inside of the groove to the outside it is 3/4 inch . The entire shaft appears to be 7/8th's inches . I am not sure how they measure it for say if you want a pully attached or a shaft extended , or pillow block or whatnot . Thoughts ? DavidLast edited by drmccubx; 04-20-2015 at 12:08 AM.
