If I am grinding a full hollow I do everything on the rest apart from when I blend the belly into both the grinds when I will use a small wheel and a mix of non-woven and trizact belts freehand.

All my wedge blades which is what I predominantly grind, are done freehand, apart from something like a 20th century American style wedge (think Union spike) which I grind on the rest also. I find you want more than freehand accuracy if you are grinding a razor with a straight edge whereas something like a 19th century Sheffield style wedge with a slight smile you have a bit more margin for error.

Bob had a wet grinding setup, dripping water on his belts iirc. He wore a plastic apron, hood, etc because the thing sprayed everywhere. It's one of the reasons he stopped making razors because the cold water was causing him hurt in his finger joints.

I do remember him acting surprised that we all didn't have water dripping on our belts.

I can understand the technical benefits, but it would create an unholy mess. I think he told me he had a dedicated shed or area for grinding, and it and he ended up completely drenched. Definitely not something I'd do in my shop, ever.

I have ground with Bob and his setup, it was wet, but not super wet. He used a sponge a lot to add water, a container of water and a sponge to wet down the belt every so often. Bob would do a lot of hand sanding to smooth out the hills and valleys.

Understatement of the year

Not specifically for razors, but I'm in the process of making a 19" contact wheel for my 2X72. The joys of large diameter wheels is that at the scale that we are working at, they are effectively flat and much nicer to use than platens. I had previously made a 14" wheel that I use a lot and my curiosity over an even bigger wheel got the best of me.

I am waiting on pictures, it sounds like a good project.

edit: I am really waiting/wanting to try it out, soon as all this hootenanny dies down, I want to see it in person.
