I use a DE when I really:
a) must shave and am in a rush
b) must shave and don't feel well
c) sometimes just for a change of pace
In all cases the beard has to be reasonably short. If I'm already sporting a week or so of growth the straight is faster than anything else (by the time I use the beard trimmer to shorten it enough for DE/cartridge/electric to work reasonably well).
A good DE shave is definitely nothing to scoff at. I can about the same overall closeness with a DE and there are several places I can get closer than I have managed with a straight so far. Generally it allows me to safely cheat a little more (first pass ATG, etc.) in the interests of time. For me, the overall quality of the save isn't as good as it is with a straight but is far better than I got with the cartridge or electric.

Justin,
The Feather AC is great--I LOVE mine--but it actually requires more concentration than a straight. The edge is sharper and you need to use less pressure.
A DE does well for those days when you have to shave when you're rushed, stressed, or upset.

I still use a DE quite frequently. I enjoy it. It's not the same process, and sometimes, I just don't feel like stropping. And if I'm not going to to it right, I don't do it at all. But I would never go back strictly to a DE. Never.

After switching to a straight in November '05, for awhile I still tossed my M3 into my travel bag (along with a straight) in case I was rushed or whatnot. I think I used it two or three times, but since early '06 it had been sitting in the back of a drawer. This weekend a friend and his wife were over for dinner and he mentioned having lost his M3 on a recent trip to Berkley for research. He hated the thought of buying another because of the cost--he'd been using his wifes Venus for a week. I tried to give him a straight to try out, but the look of fear on his face and the snide remark from his wife told me that there was no way I was going to make a sale here. Anyway, I finally tossed away my last crutch...gave him my M3 and 4 cartridges.
No going back now baby!
Cheers,
Ed
