Congrats on both your retirement and sticking to your standards! I was in a similar situation about 5 years ago.
Taught automotive mechanics for close to 30 years and when I started it was run and owned by the same gentleman that started it in 1948. It was a wonderful place to work and we sent graduates into the world with the knowledge to earn a good living. The original owner passed and we went thru a rough transition for a few years and we were eventually bought out by a large corporation and went from an educational institution into a business and the bottom line was PROFIT!
Things got worse quickly, both financially and attitude towards staff/employees and our product ( students ) declined rapidly as we went from kids getting student loans to primarily people that got government backed free money! So I got feed up, went in one day and told them I was done!!
Now I collect my pension, do some side work ( auto ) and repair things to sell in my wifes resale shop. And having a blast doing it! I enjoy repairing furniture/old clocks/lamps you name it, I fix it and we sell it. So hang in there and enjoy. Something will strike your fancy and keep you busy.

Thanked: 351Congratulations on your retirement.
Isn't it funny how the Corporate Pin Heads figure that if profits drop, the only solution is to further cut costs and service. I swear it's a race to the bottom and like yourself, I don't want to be a part of it.
I'll be following your footsteps by the end of May this year, possibly sooner depending on some contract issues. I've only got 32+ years of service, but I've had enough...
They just don't get it when I suggest: If we REALLY cared about our customers, shouldn't we tell them to go somewhere else?
Once again, congratulations on a retirement well deserved... 36 years is a looong time!
Regards

Thanked: 228I retired at 55 years of age ten years ago and I don't regret it at all. I keep busy and enjoy it one day at a time. Working for the man, imo, is over rated!

Back before I started with Safeway I was working for a mom and pop kind of store. The owner (Freddie) had started with Safeway in 1934 as an apprentice meat cutter, then rose to become a store manager and then started his own grocery business in 1949.
We got paid In Cash every Saturday. Freddie would come up to me with a book in his hands, turn to my page, hand me the little ticker tape from the adding machine, show me my gross wages, how much was taken out for this and that and tell me what the net pay was. Let's say it was $101.25. He'd count it out to me/$20 $40 $60 $80 $100' $1.25 and then once it was all in my hand he would say; Thank you. He thanked Every Employee--Every Week/except the week his wife passed and the store manager paid and thanked us.
Corporate America could learn something from men like him.Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Congratulations on your retirement mate.
Over on this side of the pond we had a priminister who raped the state pension fund of Billions of £s so I & many others have to work on past retirement age & pray that the government of the Day doesn't keep pushing the age limit up.
I wish you all the best for your new life change.
Cheers Paul

I retired 12 years ago and have never looked back.
Like others have said it's what you make of it. The important thing is establish a routine and keep busy doing things you enjoy. Too many guys retire without a thought to their future and become miserable and go back to work-so sad.
Congratulations. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
