Thanked: 0Straight razor for my boyfriend...
Hello everyone!
First off, I really wanted to thank everybody on here -- because before reading this site and looking at other peoples comments, I was completely lost on straight razor culture.
My boyfriend collects straight razors, and specifically vintage ones. However, unfortunately I'm really don't have any deep knowledge of them - and I would like to buy him one as a total suprise. I've taken a look at the websites you guys have provided as to where I could purchase some - I really fell in love with this one: http://www.vintagebladesllc.com/vsho...&cat=80&page=1
As straight razor experts, would this be appropriate?
If you recieved that straight razor, would you be happy??
Any comments would be super helpful!
Thanks in advance

Thanked: 5Wish my girlfriend was as understanding with this hobby...
Anyways, that is a very nice condition razor from a good company and I'd be more than happy to receive it as a gift. I think it might be a touch expensive; then again you don't see many FWE razors in that condition so the price might be right on target.
AH, wait, it's been sharpened by Lynn Abrams. That would account for the higher price. In that case, I would say this razor is fairly pricedLast edited by edk442; 08-03-2007 at 03:47 AM.

Thanked: 0Thanks :)
Hi Eric,
It's a unique hobby, that's for sure! But that is what is so interesting. I had no idea there was a community this huge!
Thank you for the great advice, and I see that having it sharpened by Lynn is considered a good thing!
I actually have been digging around and I really like the "Thiers-Issard" razors as well. I'm so lost - but I'm sure with everyone's input, I'll know exactly where to look!
This one looks nice too: http://www.classicshaving.com/catalo...013/564217.htm
Oh and I must add - my boyfriend does not use them to shave - he just collects them Does it matter if it is vintage or not? I believe he has a bit of both
In your opinion, what is your (and whom ever else reads) favorite razor and why?Last edited by srnewbie; 08-03-2007 at 04:03 AM.

It all depends on how much you want to spend and how much time you have. Jim who owns vintage blades is a great guy to talk too, and would be happy to tell you anything you wanted to know about the razor you are interested in. You may want to check the for sale section, call Jim, or look in the restoration section for ideas of what you are looking for. Feel free to IM me if you need any help.

Thanked: 0Oh wow!
You guys are fantastic! I didn't know I'd get this many responses so quickly...! Thank you!
X-man: I checked out that site as well - they are beautiful razors... but perhaps a "bit" out of my price range - then again, I'm not sure what price range I'm looking for. I suppose I'm willing to spend around 100-130$. Is that reasonable?
JLStorm: I have less than 2 weeks. I'm cutting it close :P I really wanted to find something nice (especially because he thinks I have no interest) - it would shock him when he sees it
I think I will contact Jim as well - and see what else he can also recommend
Thanks again guys - you have no idea how helpful you've been, please keep the comments coming

Thanked: 1587It's possible that your boyfriend already has this one (and it may be out of your price range ) but the Bergischer Lowe is a beautiful razor IMO.

Thanked: 0Jimbo: That is a beautiful razor! I mean, I wouldn't mind going the extra mile - I guess it all depends. I need to somehow check out what he has and/or doesn't have. I don't believe I saw one like that though! Thank you - I'm bookmarking it

If your boyfriend hones his own razors (sharpens them) you have quite a few options which would be vintage blades, classic shaving, or buying something used on this site. If he does not do his own sharpening I would probably stick to buying a used razor here that has been honed and is shave ready. Jim may hone his razor in house (I have no idea if he does or not) but classic shaving sends them to Lynn (the founder of this site) and he takes about a week or so to get them honed and sent out which may be cutting it close.
