    Default Other "old time" hobbies

    Hi,
Maybe it is a personality thing, but aside from the straight razor appeal, I also am drawn to mechanical watches, fountain pens, and the longbow (currently building one now). Anybody else have "old time" hobbies?

I don't know if it is old time enough to qualify but some of the bicycles I routinely ride were made in the early '70s and have down tube shifters and 5 or 6 cog freewheels. I also ride fixed gear on the road sometimes and used to on the velodrome. That is kind of old timey I guess.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Well I'm an avide pool player, both competitive and recreational. Although it is still enjoyed by many today it's been around a long time.

I spin fiber into yarn. Mostly Mohair and wools from my own and local animals. My sewing machine is a 1902 Singer Treddle and I work with leather. I still can and pickle my own garden produce. I plow snow and my garden with pony power. Things are a bit "Old Fashioned" around here.

I have a few mechanical watches. I collect fountain pens (Conklin Crescents and anything else with a hard rubber holder and a wet noodle nib). I practice Spencerian penmanship and collect antique dip pens and nibs. I collect cuff links and studs. I prefer detachable starched collars. I tie my own bow tie.

I have a yen for dead languages. I have studied Sanskrit, Scot's Gaelic, and Anglo Saxon, but I did not get very far in any of those. I have been studying Latin online the past couple of years and when I get good at that, I'd like to join the Greek online group.

I fenced foil and epee until an injury about a year ago. All of my firearms are smoothbore flintlocks.

I'm a bit of a railfan and love riding trains - steam or diesel. I love river boats.

And then, there is my wish list. . .

Fixed gears are cool. I used to race when I was in my twenties. I had one road bike with a fixed gear setup for training. I rode on nothing but sew-ups - nylons, I couldn't afford silk. Even nylons were great handling and they sang when you rode. I heard that nobody uses sew-ups anymore. That's a shame.

I used to collect WWI Battle rifles, till they took over the house

I had to make a few changes in my collecting habbits years ago and reduced them to much smaller scales. I tend to go overboard or as some have called me a "Collect-aholic"

So after downsizing my vast interests (that I act apon) I'm left with just a few that don't take up much room, but are deep and interesting.

Seated Liberty Dimes and Half-Dimes, Cookbooks on beer and cooking (they go way back), RAD and HAD are already assumed

The rest are less "old time" but are or can be used in daily life. Kitchen knives, Cast Irom pans (bad idea if you move alot...) and so on....

I used to fence foil and epee in college as well. Never liked the sabre, however. Also a train buff.
