    Default Other "old time" hobbies

    Hi,
Maybe it is a personality thing, but aside from the straight razor appeal, I also am drawn to mechanical watches, fountain pens, and the longbow (currently building one now). Anybody else have "old time" hobbies?

I don't know if it is old time enough to qualify but some of the bicycles I routinely ride were made in the early '70s and have down tube shifters and 5 or 6 cog freewheels. I also ride fixed gear on the road sometimes and used to on the velodrome. That is kind of old timey I guess.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Well I'm an avide pool player, both competitive and recreational. Although it is still enjoyed by many today it's been around a long time.

I spin fiber into yarn. Mostly Mohair and wools from my own and local animals. My sewing machine is a 1902 Singer Treddle and I work with leather. I still can and pickle my own garden produce. I plow snow and my garden with pony power. Things are a bit "Old Fashioned" around here.

I wanted to learn blacksmithing when I got out of high school, but never lived anywhere that would accommodate a forge, so that dream died off.

I don't have any old time hobbies, unless you think cooking from scratch is old school. Maybe I could steal a cheap and easy one, from one of you fine gentlemen.

    Ms Blackwolf,

My wife is very into the fiber arts - she cards, spins, and does just about everything else involved with turning animal hair into usable yarn - though her interest is ART yarn. Oh, and she doesn't use a SR. She has used a DE to shave her legs but that was years ago.

Does sitting on the porch in a rocking chair, smoking a pipe with a shotgun in the lap count?
Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated...

Fixed gears are cool. I used to race when I was in my twenties. I had one road bike with a fixed gear setup for training. I rode on nothing but sew-ups - nylons, I couldn't afford silk. Even nylons were great handling and they sang when you rode. I heard that nobody uses sew-ups anymore. That's a shame.
