Thanked: 488There are some people who have said when they first started they were shaking and couldn't finish. Never understood that at all. As has been said I've had worse cuts from a DE. You just take your time and don't shave when your in a big hurry. Enjoy the experience and read the wikis for new shavers there is a ton of info for you there so you can get started right.
Just one little thing when you buy that first razor buy one with a rounded toe(end of blade). They are more user friendly when you first start out.

Thanked: 267It is possible to cut yourself but most of the cuts are superficial. You would be amazed how tough your skin is. When shaving with sharp straight the pressure that you use is very light. The pressure that I use is so light that sometimes I feel the bite of the blade but I get no blood.
Take care,
Richard

Thanked: 143Yesterday I did drop one of my straights.
I was proud of myself in that I resisted two urges that appeared almost instantly: grab it with my hand and stick my foot under it to break its fall.
I did neither! It took quick reflexes to resist my reflexes, if that makes sense.
Yes, the edge got messed up a little. I think I will get the chance to try my new hone collection coming from SRD.

Thanked: 0I've seen my share of blood during shaves. But my worst cuts shave was my very first shave at very young age. I Didn't know what I was doing and cut myself badly with a Mach3. Cuts and blood all over the place. My technique was SO bad and my lather was shave gel wasn't mixed with water that it made things actually worse.
I've cut myself plenty with my straights, but it's no problem. It heals quite quickly and it's usually a result of complacency.
Some rules help. I like to shave in the evening, but not after I have consumed a beer or glass of whisky. Although I can't feel any difference, but I notice my shaves become rougher after 1 glass of alcohol. This only emphasis my believe you should be well aware of what you are doing with your razor. It is razor-sharp after all.

DAMN! That's a real close call, I've gotten a couple of serious gashes trying to catch steel mid air which is much more damage than I've ever done to my face. The worst shaving cut I have got was from a Mach 3 and I have 3 scar lines in my sideburns to prove it!
Cheers!

There is a big financial risk...
RAD, HAD, SCAD, SAD can become a big problem.. SWMBO even checked all the parcels that the mailman brought for hidden razors..
nicks and cuts? only had a few in the first weeks and only when I was in a hurry.. I did cut myself a couple of times while I was honing but both the honing cuts and the beginner cuts where not a lot worse than a paper cut...
I think working at an office is far more dangerous than shaving with a straight..
I like the idea of these "risks" popping up every now and then. Its the same as people being scared of elevators while I know a lot more people are getting injured or even killed on the stairs.

Thanked: 488I can fess up about a bad cut I got a couple of months ago. It's the first and hopefully the last.
Well ya see I have this cat who is a very inquisitive guy. I guess all of them are but he's an exotic called a Bengal,no not the Tiger, but they take wild southeast Asian cats and breed them with domestic US cats. Anyway to the point. He's always around when I'm shaving usually just watching but this time when I finished shaving he wanted to see what I was doing cleaning this razor up so he jumped up so he could see better and hit my left hand which had the razor in it. Ok no problem except my right hand was to close and the blade hit the middle finger of my right hand. I had just honed this razor so it was very sharp. It cut deep and about half or three quarters of an inch long. I could have used a couple of stitches but I used a bandage that holds the skin together and since my tetnus shot is up to date after cleaning up the blood and cussing out the cat I called it a lesson learned so now he is out of the bathroom when I'm shaving.
Hopefully that's the first and last time I get a cut like that!
