Actual risk?
The more I read, the more people say shaving with a straight is "extremely" dangerous.
I'm just wondering, beyond the nicks and cuts, how many people actually get serious injuries from shaving? As in, go to the hospital before your bleed to death on the shower rug.
I don't want to be reattaching my adams apple with bubble gum.
I couldn't care less about some paper cut like slices on my face, but I don't want to cut a whole cheek off.

Where are you reading that? That's ridiculous!
Now, to be honest it is a very very sharp piece of steel, and if you do something stupid you can give yourself a nasty cut (as you can with any razor). But I would say that it's rare, and if you pay attention you'll never get more than a bit of a scratch.
As for actually pieces of your face falling off...not unless you try really hard.

Where have you been reading that straight shaving is extremely dangerous? Overprotectivemothers.com?
Yeah, you have a rediculously sharp blade up to your face and neck. You might get a nick. You might get a slice. THey will almost definitely be very thin, and hopefully short. I don't know anyone that has seriously injured their face while shaving. Dropped razors, injured while honing, etc...more likely, but one tends to be pretty friggen careful when running a straight blade around their face. Relax. Men have been doing it for a couple hundred years. There is a learning curve, and you will surely get a nick here or there, but nothing that a little alum, a touch of neosporin, and a few stiches won't take care of (just kidding!)
Welcome aboard, and let us know if we can help as you get into this "extremely dangerous" hobby/fascination/lost art. On tuesday afternoons we all drive drunk without our seatbelts while juggling live cobras...that's not nearly as dangerous as it sounds, either.

Shaving with a straight is no more dangerous that cutting veggies with a sharp knife - if you are paying attention, no danger; if you are not paying attention, you may cut yourself.
I've nicked myself more with my DE razors (which is far less frequent than when I was using a cartridge razor) than I have with my straights.
Cheers,
Rick

Lol.
I've gotten plenty of help already. One person is sending me some soap and an alum bar and another has been been invaluable for advice.
As soon as I buy a visa gift card I'll probably be buying a razor from a member here also.
Just playing the waiting game now!
Youtube, by the way. I guess one should never believe anything said on that site.

Don't listen to these guys.
Why, we've lost almost 40 members this year alone. Its gotten so bad we used to have an on line memorial plaque to those who have given their lives to straight shaving but they took it off because it just scared guys away. Why the first week I started I shaved off both earlobes and my adams apple.
Just remember to do an autologus blood donation before you start and make sure you have you life insurance paid up and don't forget the mortuary plan. Also if the worst does happen we'll supply the pallbearers at the funeral.
Just kidding of course. Jump in the water's fine!No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 3795If you do something stupid like trying to catch your razor after dropping it, then yes, it could be dangerous.
SHAVING with a straight is not dangerous.
Want proof?
If we kept killing ourselves off, our membership would be rather limited!

Thanked: 363Little known fact:
Vangogh was straight razor shaving, then after a slight mishap figured it was cool to send the ear off to a hooker.
