    Default Newbie Information

What do you guys think about a separate area for new guy questions, so that new guys can come in and immediately see other new guy questions and answers? Maybe we can even have a sticky with some of our links? Lynn

    OOOOOOoooooohhhhh YEEEEEAAaaaaaahhhhhhh!

Me likes the sticky's with links to reading materials etc. But a seperate section for Q/A would be an added bonus. :P We do tend to stray from some topics in other threads,... as the natural course of discussion. Having a Q/A area that we could limit opinion and stick towards facts when possible would be great!

    Thanks Lynn!

well i figure i will post here as this may be a "newbie" question...

all this talk about razors sizes confuses me a bit. how do you differentiate between a 5/8, 6/8, 4/8?

what do these numbers stand for...?

    thanks

They are fractions of an inch and represent how wide the blade is from back to edge. What that means to the shaving action is still beyond me.

3" edges seem to be standard. Some are smaller around 2 1/2". Wade & Butchers are sometimes 3 1/4" ish. Usually the full length of the steel is mentioned (eg. 6"). This doesn't matter so much for the shave, but the shaver. Bigger hands will prefer bigger blades it seems. I have just started with a 2 1/2" blade that might make some of the tighter angles a little easier for me.

To get back on Lynn's topic...

Many of the other forums I use (non-razor related), have a newbie forum. It had it's +/-'s, but overall I think the +'s outweigh the negatives. I vote YES.

I like the idea. Newbie questions quickly get buried here because of the number of posts. Many groups I am on have a Newbie section. We could post stickies for the common stuff, ie... what do I need, brands to avoid, links to the shaving and stropping video, etc.....

I like the stickies idea. They always stay at the top of the forum. One for stropping questions, one for brands to avoid, etc. Could be very useful for the new guys.

Its a great idea. Just keep in mind you need some experienced guys checking it once in a while. Lots of forums have newbie section that either go unanswered for days and then posted in the other sections or the questions get answered by other newbies, which doesn't really solve anything either. I would suggest a section on honing, stropping, buying, shaving, prep, and cautions. A hotlink to the files for each and maybe a hotlink for "Contact a honemiester" If you can divide the subject areas that usually helps newbies as they (and I) can get confused about stuff like "I thought you said to use a pyramid scheme when buying off E-bay, or was that honing, or stropping?" I also like a basics sections with maybe a FAQ Q and A area.
