Thread: I Love This Place!!

If it was not for this site I definitely would NOT have pursued shaving with a straight razor. My wonderful shaving adventure began when I had the fantastic idea that an electric shaver would be better than my usual Mach 3. Well it wasn't. I ended up returning the electric shaver to the store where I bought it, but would only offer me store credit. Looking around the store I saw that they had a Merkur DE razor, which I used my newly acquired store credit to purchase.
So learning to shave with that and researching it online eventually lead me to the straight razor. I bought a new Dovo that they had in the store and also a Dovo strop that they sold. So I tried to shave with it (which was sold as "shave-ready" by the store clerk) and it was VERY painful. I didn't know how to make it sharper, and the quest to learn how to hone lead me to SRP, and a set of Nortons.
I don't know anyone who uses a straight razor, so if it was not for all of the information and very helpful people in this online community I would not have learned how to use my equipment and given up, and I was very close to giving up at one point since I did not know of any resources. But once I joined SRP, my hopes raised and as I read and read, I learned more and more and learned enough to learn how to learn on my own, though slowly I might add. It's been 11 months since I joined, and now I finish my razors on a Nakayama Maruichi and have a full set of Shapton glass stones on their way to me! It's been a wonderful journey, one in which I have indeed had fun on. I agree with what has been said: it is not the site that makes SRP what it is, it is the people that make it.
I indeed love this place too.

Just the abstract threads in the honing section keep me hooked, and I think I learn something every day I come here and spend time at this forum.

Congrats on the 1000 posts Dave!
It is the people that make a place and not the other way around. I'm honoured to call SRP home and without the support of Lynn and the Gents I would never have taken up straights myself.
Cheers!

Right on!
I'm only a few months in and SRP is my FAVORITE place on the web. I love shaving, anticipate the time when I can start honing, and I know that there will always be a place that I can come to where people freely impart the Art to the world at large. I love being a part of the system here! Viva SRP!
