I too remember barbers slapping the razor down on the strop and gong wild with the motion. I also have seen three part strops with finish leather, an intermediate leather and linen. The intermediate may have been pasted with red paste too.
I know people have been pasting hanging strops for a long time but one does have to be more aware of his technique when doing so.
This is kind of funny, we started talking about blindly following like lemmings then Nenad posts about a guy that has clearly started outside the box and is cutting his own path and here were are ready to follow in his path <g> More lemmings.

Its OK Tony, Beth will order one for me ... you'll never know. Lemming, Yeeeee HAAAAA. It works. It works really well. I'm not able to replicate this weird red lathery strop Nenad is talking about, but I used two strops. One my daily strop and one of my allllll time favorite strop I keep for special stropping occasions. My Tony Miller special wonder strop. Does that help any Tony? Yea, so I put the .5 on there and let it roll about 2 inches and did the exact same with the daily strop with lather. Works great. Razor cuts hanging hairs better than ever. Shaved nice too. Finally, after about a year I get good shaves with that stinkin' stainless Dovo. OK, I'm a lemming, but dang it shaves nice.

Grist For The Mill
This shows the stropping I remember and I was told teh reason he was going fast was so that the metal would warm up and respond to the stropping. Looks a little aggressive, but the guy's clearly a Sweeny Todd MADMAN!
