Barber hone month (using barber hones only forthe month of april
Ok guys i have an idea similar to the janorton that wen ton in january how about we try to use only barber hones for the month of april.
the rules are
1.it must be a barber hone or if you dont have one cant afford one a c12k hone will do in a pinch.
2.you have to use it only to hone up razors slash keep them honed for the whole month,
3. razors you do for anyone else or complete restors are allowed to use your normal hones.
4. if you are honeing a razor up from scratch you can set the bevel on a low grit hone but all the polishing has to come from a barber hone. (i know this can be done)
5 and this is the most important rule HAVE FUN and keep me updated on whos trying it and what the results are.
i have verry mimual honing experiance and all ive ever had to use was a barberhone so i know they are capible of alot.

can we use several different barber's hones? my pike cuts differently than my axolite which is still different from my boss barber and so on.

So i have decided on just one razor for the month, i shave daily. the razor "Rudolf Stehlo Solingen Rostfrei" was in need of a good honing so i took it to my 2k glass shapton to get it started. then on to barber's hones. All the barber's hones have been lapped on dmts 325, 600 and 1200 and i used the back sides for the honing.
started with the one that feels coarsest to my fingers an axolite #200 with water, gave it 300 circles and then 500 laps and it was tugging at the arm hairs.
moved to the "boss barber" also with water, 450 laps and it was cutting arm hair at the skin level.
switched to the krystolo (a norton pike product) with water (although the directions say use it dry) 325 laps and it was mowing arm hair above the skin.
decided to test shave with it and although the edge was sharp and shiny it was not quite ready. i had only tried one area of my face. so i stopped.
75 more laps on the krystolo dry this time followed by 20 laps on my smallest hone "Extra fine razor hone manufactured expressly for particular people" with water then a return to the shave.
was comfortable on the WTG and XTG, the ATG was not great. wound up with some burn on the neck.
for the rest of the month i will limit myself to the krystolo.Last edited by syslight; 04-01-2012 at 03:15 PM. Reason: added info

Today i gave the Stehlo 30 more laps on the krystolo... 3 pass shave, no burn. the edge is nearly perfect. I'll use it again tomorrow without any more trips on the hone.

The stehlo performed well tuesday to saturday... but saturday it started to pull a bit on the chin. so this morning 10 laps on the krystolo, dry... a nice BBS 3 pass shave again.
enjoy,
jim

Monday morning. I've found that the best razor that I have for this journey is a Larkin 5/8 round end. These were one of the premiums that were given out with 'Larkin Soap' . A very solid razor that does well with a Barber Hone. Used it this morning with a Crown brown hone. 20 each side with water, 20 with lather. So far so good . See you tomorrow.

Good thread, I for one would like to see more participation. Before I found SRP I used nothing but a barbers hone to keep a razor keen. They work quite well.
