Thanked: 4206Thanks Rick.
Just when I was leaving you guys were discussing tape vs no tape from the 4k range up.
I recall Phil seemed kind of odd man out in that he was suggesting tape off after 1k. Suggesting that the subsequent stropping and blade maintenance would be better as the edge was more on the correct angle with the strop by preparing it on the stones. At least that's how I think he was describing it.
Everyone at the table seemed to be pro tape all the way up, and I assumed the same, just wondering though if maybe there is something to it.
Figure I have a shiny new gold dollar I will practice on, see how it goes with respect to spine wear..
Cheers.

Thanked: 10Mike: do a search under "double bevel" and take a look at the honing videos, there is a series from one of the other meet-ups in the States where the demonstrator gives a very good explaination of double bevel. It's too hard to type out the description of what it is and it's better understood by pictures. That is the reason I keep tape on the spine throughout the entire honing process (with the exception of pasted strops/linen/leather). If your ever in the London area and want to sit around and do some honing let me know.

Hey Mike, don't forget to grind off those shoulders first, as I recall they were pretty bulky

Thanked: 4206Spent all night last night lapping the new stone on my dmt, took off the corners as well, spent tonight testing it with my Ontario Cutlery, 'easy cutter'.
Picture doesn't really show the edge but after the norton I finished on my brown hand hone, I forget what Colin thought it might be called. Then strop.
Thing shaves clumps of hairs easily off the leg mid hair now and I look forward to the morning test shave.
Wouldn't have gotten the norton so quickly without test driving some of yours, so cheers for that gents.
The nagura stone makes slurry and sort of cleans and levels the hone surface as I understand, the slurry itself makes the surface grit lower or higher when it's all chalky like it gets? I think it's lower, but just asking.
And if you mean grind down the gold dollar shoulder Mike, I did. Were you able to get an edge on yours? I figured it was a gag razor.
Thanks.Last edited by MikeB52; 09-21-2013 at 05:08 AM.

That's awesome MikeB52 !
You got the only Gold Dollar but i have had a few restoratons in the past that i had to take a frown out of for that same reason
I was so impressed by the number of guys trying their hand at honing at the meet. I am thankful to the more experienced honers for their instruction and that it just seemed quite harmonious. It was a great day for me and such an honor to have you all here.
Thanks again guys !
Mike

He did a restore for me right after the meet and did a great job. Val was the one with the lot of large blades. Any specific question?_

Thanked: 5Thanks Andrew and Greg!
It was a pleasure hanging out with you guys at Mike's.
I think that Kyle is asking around because he's considering to send me some razors for honing, and he may be looking to get a razor from me as well.
I might be wrong, tho.
In any case, thanks for the kind words. I can't wait to get together again!!!
