Total noob in Dallas
So I just got a Dovo 5/8" straight razor, a Dovo strop, a badger brush, mug, and some col. conk's bay rum soap in the mail this past thursday. Now all I need is a clue and someone to tell me what I'm doing/have done right, and whether or not my razor needs to be honed. I already sent a similar message to Dewey, but the gist is that I'd like to hang out some time and have someone with an experienced eye take a look at my gear. Also, I want to know if there's anywhere I can get a strop or get my razor honed nearby. I'm an instant gratification kinda guy when it comes to buying something and shipping is a nightmare sometimes. Any help? Send me a message or you can e-mail me, but my given e-mail here rarely gets checked. Thanks
By the way, I'm kind of a night owl and I'm down to have a beer with any of you who are free tonight or anytime on a tuesday or wednesday. As far as the 3rd is concerned, I'm kinda committed to something already, but that depends on time of dayLast edited by CDpyroNme; 04-21-2008 at 01:36 AM.

welcome to SRP. i will gaurantee you that you will need to have your razor honed. sounds like you got a nice set up to start out with.
what area of north texas are you in? we have people all over the metroplex.
if you can make it out on the 3rd even if only for an hour or so you will be happy you came.
hope to see you there.

Hey guys, me again! Sorry I can't make the meet up since I'll be out of Dallas by then, but since I have been here I picked up two straights! This weekend was the Buchanen antique show or something in Fair Park (which is oddly where my 2 week gig is also). I went through the booths and found a lot of junk razors way overpriced, but did manage to pick up a NICE old 6/8+ Bengall Oblique-ish point for cheap. I also got a Thomas Wilson (I think it was- forget) ~6/8 Sheffield for even cheaper at an antique shop. So Dallas has been good to me! If I'm ever through here again I'll let you know! Or if anyone has any razors they want to sell while I am here, let me know before Sunday the 27th! Thanks

The problem with the third is that I don't get off work until 6:15/6:30ish and that's in Plano, so add drive time. I live off of skillman and 635 in Ghe-Tto, but rent's cheap ;0)... Any chance you guys could be conned into starting this thing later or hanging out a LONG time??? I don't know that Sherlock's would be thrilled about a bunch of guys brandishing scalpel-sharp grooming tools during primetime hours, though... Gimme an idea of how late you'll be there and I'll see if I can leave an hour or two early. Any local can feel free to PM me to exchange numbers and we can do a smaller gathering another time. Are there any places around town to pick up a norton 4k/8k in person? And what the hell is a dmt?

1. plano is not too far from where we will be in arlington, it's right off 30. dunno how long it will go on, but if it doesn't work out, one of us can prolly work something out
2. you can get a norton at any fancy woodworking store, there is a woodcraft in ft worth and on up in richardson too, if i remember correctly
3. a dmt is a brand of diamond plate sharpening stones

Dear god, Arlington. My last trip there was a driving nightmare, but I had just moved here. I might be able to make it around 2ish... This is off-topic, but what does everyone here do? I'm a massage therapist, so my schedule is kinda like that of a waiter - I miss work, I lose money, so I'll have to do a half-day work sort of thing, but I think I can manage that as I have no appointments thus far... Are most of you guys 9 to 5ers or do we have any others with the oddball schedule? Also, where in DFW is everyone located?

I'll be getting off around 2 on the third unless something tragic happens, so I'll make it a little late, but I'll be there...
