That's witty but kind of derails the point, the op did say edge.

Birnardo, if when i started i shaved off nothing but the norton 8k i would have probably given it up.

You have to know how to hone and how to straight razor shave for it to make sense. I've been using a Norton single grit 4k & 8k for over 5 years. Though he has more hones than you can shake a stick at, Lynn Abrams frequently goes back to those two tried and true workhorses.

One of the best honers of razors I've ever encountered, lives in Mississippi, and sells under the name cedarfurntureman on ebay, uses the Norton 4/8 as his sharpening/early finishing hones, and he does the pyramid, and so do I.

The purpose of shaving off of the 4/8 first is to know for sure you have gotten the razor to a level of sharp and smooth that is enough to justify going to a higher grit stone. I personally found this to be a very effective way to insure I was 'getting the job done' and not going up in grit prematurely when I was a beginning honer.

Thanks to Randydance for giving me the tip. Upon shaving at the 8k level, many times, I've found that I could get along fine if that was the highest grit hone I had. YMMV.

    Yeah, you might have.
But seeing as you haven't honed a good razor to the max on one, we will never know now will we?
These boards are full of people who have experienced, first hand, that a proper hone job on a Norton 8K will yield a pretty decent shave.
I've done it myself on many a razor.
You wouldn't have to search these boards for very long to see that many of us have moved to even finer grits on our razors, but that does not mean a shave can't be had quite comfortably off the Norton.

But not all, I'm sure to some it simply isn't enough..

I finish my razors on 12k chinese hone and usually do 2 to 3 hundred strokes on the strop. There absolutely has to be no tugging feeling whatsoever when i go ATG!
    Have a nice day!

Seeing as i have never honed a razor to the max on one. That's rather speculative.

You seem to have a problem taking people's word for it ? It is as if since you don't have the skill to get that level of sharpness and smoothness out of the 8k you jump to the conclusion that no one else could do it either.

Looking at your posting history, short though it is, I see you do not like the 8k, you do not like pyramid honing, and finally you do like gold dollar razors. Unusual for a new member to be so opinionated, and in a way that counters conclusions that most members of SRP have drawn from hands on experience over multiple years.

Personally, I have no problem with not liking the 8k or pyramids, or liking gold dollars.

I don't mind an opinion that differs from most members. Actually, I welcome that because it fosters more discussion.

The thing is, that discussion needs to be a respectful and thoughtful dialog.

It just struck me as odd that a guy with less than 10 posts, at the time, would bring up subjects that have stimulated controversy in past threads. It is a free country, more or less, and we can pay our money and choose what we want. Use what we want how we want. I agree with that. My guess is the OP was looking for trouble to begin with.
