Ebay Gambling again :D
Had a little gamble today. Won an auction for £11. What it is I have no idea, nor did the seller who couldn't even spell natural correctly.
I think it's probably a purple slate. It looks older than AJ's by a fair margin and the dimensions seem odd for a UK stone of age. The seller also had another 2 stones that were in other auctions that looked old as well so I suspect these came to him in a single house clearance or similar.
Listed as 5 1/2 x 2 3/4 x 7/8 I actually think it's a 140mm x 75 x 20 cut. If I'm right on the dimensions then the chance of it not been a slate and been something all together more European might be plausible.
The pictures are shocking. A gamble is as a gamble does and I'm prepared for a £11 slate. Would you have bid

Congratulations thanks for sharing It's a chunk of a stone that's for sure. Could be slate, you'll have to clean up and test. Here is a similar sized stone that was more of the Vosges Mountain type if one had to name it.

The larger stone is more a mid range stone. The narrow is a very fine finisher

I should have it by the end of next week.
The auction has been bugging me for a few days now, I've looked at the pictures probably 50 or so times. And every time I've looked it's been well it could be a BBW, or a slate, or something all together more exotic. Looking at the other auctions it looked like a large sandstone type, and a finisher in bad condition. So I made the assumption this was the middle stone if that was the rotation and the stones were linked.
I set a total budget for the stone £15 with postage so as not to be stung by a slate, and I don't own a purple slate either so I figured it's worth a punt. Then no one bothered to bid at all... the 2 bids are both from me. A min bid and then an extended one 30 seconds before the end for the total budget.
Once it's here I'll take some better pictures, then lap it up and take some more.Real name, Blake

Watched the auction, my guess would be a Lorraine Rouge in Razor Size...the size does fit...
You can see these fine whittish lines from the side view, another indicator...the pictures were too bad and too dark...
Great Gamble whatever it is [emoji106]

That stone is one of your Goldfisch Wetzstein's I recognise the pictures.
I think I must be learning something. It's still a gamble but I think the theory of the gamble has been correct. I almost linked it here to get an opinion before the auction ended. I'm glad I didn't now!
You saying that you were watching it makes me feel a lot better about the buy.Real name, Blake

This was the Goldfisch correct, i own several La Lorraine which are the same stones (Lorraine Rouge). What made me thought its Lorraine was the very pinkish/reddish coloration even the pics were that dark plus these faint visible white lines....plus the size...
Not sure for 100% but lets see what you get when it arrives...if you do not own a Lorraine iam sure youll like it!███▓▒░░.RAZORLOVESTONES.░░▒▓███

Your ebay stone looks kind of two toned, like it was stained with oil or something. Maybe that is telling of the type of stone.

I don't own any coticule or BBW's. They have been on the list but I want old stone. I'll also pick one up with a gamble auction again. I like the gamble, It adds that christmas like feel to the purchase. If I get a new one I know what it is, can get the information, and aside from my own learning curve there is no adventure in working out what it is!
As for the oil, both BBW and slate can be used with oil. It's not uncommon. It'll slow and smooth the edge from both stone types. So the oil spots arn't a big concern. Edit: doorsch beat me to the punchlineReal name, Blake
