I think a lot of the mixed reviews stems from there being 2 types of PHIG, with w very different techniques used to get a good edge off the rock. They're not like a synthetic, or even a really homogenous type of stone like a Translucent/Black Arkansas that's 99% silica. It's a sedimentary rock and you've really got to put in your time to learn your rock. It's not just a lap flat with a DMT and go affair.

Read through that thread gssixgun linked and you'll see what I mean. I think he covers just about every facet of these rocks in that thread. Good info, and a big help to anyone trying to squeeze the best edge they can out of these.

    Edit: what is an ILR?

No problem. Just wanted to set it straight that they are NOT that close!

It stands for Imperia La Roccia that is available in a 10-12k and 12-15k. It is a natural stone sold online a few places and Ebay.

The vendor for the "Imperia La Roccia" is not even forthcoming about the provenance of that rock, so take the grit rating with bit of skepticism.

Since you have the hones that I have, please let me know if you get a better edge going from a 10K up to a 15K, assuming you go that route.
