That is good looking out. Wonder what the significance of the asterisk is ?

I think the asterisk refers to their 'mixed grit explanation', per the OP's first post and link.....

Yes, but again, it is rather odd that the vendor is providing an explanation that directly contradicts the manufacturer.

I have sent an inquiry to Shapton to sort out the matter.

It doesn't make sense to me. It is either 16k or it isn't. Mixed grit ?

    .
Thanks Ron. Seems to be the simplest solution.

I doubt that there is a stone on the market with uniform , grit size particles -they varie from, whatever to whatever
If you believe that , the Shapton have defective stones , and will tell , or the retailer shop will tell , we all better start writing letters to Santa Claus again .
We live in times of great desception . If the 16 k Shapton is better and harder and a new generation sufisticated stone , than Naniwa 12 K , why the 12 K leave better edge
    I dont know guys........

Looks like someone did their due diligence on a batch of Shapton 16k glass stones and found anomalies. Shapton does not want them back, probably either sent them a better batch, refund, credit or whatever. And now the company is dumping them. Interesting.... can anyone here perform the same or similar due diligence on their 16k glass Shapton???...

You've possibly answered your own question. If the Naniwa is softer, it is easier to use, especially for new honers.

Update: Ron will get back to us from Shapton....in the meantime I found a second vendor selling the 16k for less than the 10k:

    https://www.classichandtools.com/aca...on_Stones.html

When I asked them I received the following answer:

"This is indeed correct (that the 16k is less expensive than the 10k), it was once explained to me why but in all honesty I was left rather confused!"

I also e-mailed Dictum and received the following:

"This stone has a mixture of different grits starting from 6000 to 20 000. Which gave on average 16 000. The other stones are just made of one grit."

"This is the only stone with this special grinding. Shapton also do have it on their website."

I looked on Shapton.com and Shapton.jp, found the 16k but could not see reference to this mixed grit issue., maybe someone with advanced search skills will have better luck.
