I talked to customer service at woodcraft and let them know what was going on with the hone and was immediately told that they would replace it, but they are on back order so it will be shipped out as soon as new ones come in. Since there was not even any question about it I believe that this is a common problem. So whenever the new one arrives I believe that it needs a backer right away. Another poster also said that both of his cracked the same way. I'm thinking about using a thick black slate tile as a backer.
