I own a Chosera 1k, SS 5k and a coticule. The coti is small (125x40 mm) and it is quite uncomfortable to use with slurry. Do you think that a DT with slurry can fill the void between the 5k and the coti?

There is a possibility that DT could do it but it is hard to say which one as they are natural hones and they vary with their grit.

In my limited experience with the DT's I would say that a DT with slurry would be coarser than 5K but a DT with just water might do the trick.

I have had very many DTs, and I reckon that the average is 8 - 9k if you 'finesse' them a bit. Like Stefan says, DT is more a trade mark name encompassing at least three types of slate that differ from each other, but postulating 12k - wow, that sounds incredible/impossible.

However, I find the high grit equivalents some people give to welsh slates verging on the ludicrous, to be honest.

Why not go to a SS8K that would definately fill the void without the guess work of naturals?
And they are fairy inexpensive. Just a suggestion.

I don't usually put a number on my DT, but for reference it improves the edge from my 6k synthetic (king iirc), and is improved by my Chinese natural (c12k, phig, whatever you want to call it).

This probably puts it in the 8k region, but that is purely an educated guess.

Personally I would recommend some more practice on your coticule, mine is even smaller (4 X 10 cm) and I can set a bevel using this litle stone, just do half strokes using a litle pressure and it should be pretty quick, then every minute or so at a few drops of water until it's only water and you can shave, this way you can even skip the SS 5K
