I said it before somewhere back in the thread, but if you're in the mood to play around with a DT, try lapping it up to 1500 or 2000 grit. You can really make it seem glassy, and it changes its honing characteristics a bit, from what I can tell.

Thanked: 522I have a 10 x 3 x 1/2 inch DT from Neil Miller and I have lapped it to the point that it does feel glassy on the surface. I start out with a medium slurry and dilute down to clear water. Neil estimates that my particular stone is about a 9k and I would agree with that estimate.
I have shaved directly off this stone and the results are as good as any of the 8ks I have (Norton - Shapton - Naniwa)JERRY
OOOPS! Pass the styptic please.

Better Late Than Never
Ive just ordered my DT I found that they would make any size and thickness I wanted so i went for 8x3x1 inch with a slurry stone 1x3x1/2 inch including P&P £25.
My plan is to attempt to create a combination hone out of it.
One side will be lapped with 280 grit and 600 grit wet and dry while the other side will be lapped with 280,600, 1200 grit wet and dry maybe some .05micron diamond paste to finnish off.
Any thoughts on that?
I hope to go from 1k bevel setting on to the DT cut one side, Finish with the other, to a shave ready state. Sounds good in theory, but im a total newby to honing so keep your eyes open for a post from me with the title. help DT bit my razor:-) Ive been Power Learning by watching loads of Vids im looking forward to giving this a go.
Im thinking about using mineral oil( Baby oil ) instead of water when honing I'll let you all know how I get on, could be a few weeks though.
They told me that there is about a 2 week lead time for the stone to be cut. Apparently theres a website called Straight Razor Place which has boosted the sales of these stones.
Any tips you can offer on using the DT would be appreciated and please dont say buy a norton or coti etc, Its Welsh and I'm a Welshman I need to do this (I use the same excuse for drinking JD too)

I doubt a coarse surface will make the DT act coarser for honing. It will be somewhat different I'm sure but will it be helpful? Let us know when you tried it.
With the slurry stone you'll get you won't even need a coarse side

I don't think that you will be able to use the DT from bevel to finish, IMHO its is at best from mid range to finish. I have been using mineral/baby oil, and it seems to be giving a slightly better edge, I also tried honing with water and a few drops glycerin which seemed similar. The mineral oil doesn't really penetrate and cleans off OK with soap and water.

Thanked: 2209I rate my DT as about 6K. I use it in a Norton 4k/ DT/Norton 8K sequence with good results.

FWW of course. I have found the DT to be best for getting an unruly old razor edge to behave. Some of those old beasts were a bit flaky edged at 6k King or Coticule and that went away with the DT on water, no slurry. Worked well on a Solingian that didn't want to keep a shaving edge.
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

It arrived so what i did was just used as is for a bit, then i lapped it
240,600,1200 grit wet and dry with water it give a better edge after that.
so i flipped it over and lapped it 240,600,1200 and 4000 grit wet and dry with water.
This side give a mirror finish to the edge, using water only.
im a total newby at this side of shaving
It's a slow stone did about 80ish laps on one side and 40ish laps on the finishing side.
great value for money though.

Thanked: 5Where is the link to view the stones???
Hello littlesilverbladewales, the link you posted just gets you to the site, but you can't do anything after you get there to view the stones or order or anything like that; you just see the signs and can click on everything but nothing works. What with that??? Do you go to another site to find the products or what??? Thanks for a reply, Sonny082
