Thanked: 84It's arrived. It's 8x2x1/2". It is a medium grey colour dry and nearly black wet.The edges have been beveled, the two "faces" have been "milled" rough, the slate is very dense and stable (a bit like me).Where it has been cut on the ends, it is very smooth, far smoother than the large surfaces or sides. I think it is more abrasive than my Tam.
It came in a cardboard box.

Still waiting for mine too...
...oh, wait, I only ordered it this morning
No, seriously, I had to order it simply because of the name. If it's not suitable for razors, I'll put it up for display or use it for my kitchen- and pocket knives.

Slate is metamorphosed mud which is also called "phyllite". Coticule is also metamorphosed mud but the chemistry was different while it was cooling and developed the garnet crystals which make that abrasive milk slurry which we love so much. The family of metamorphic stones is characterized as sodium/magnesium aluminosilicates. The big differences that result in properties are derived from slight different amounts of sodium, potassium, magnesium, aluminum, and silica. That's the reason slate is often found near hone quality deposits. It's also why the coticules are mounted on slate. It's stronger than coticule and local - you don't want to have to ship the stuff very far. A good basic book on this is Dana's Mineralogy which is a classic in the field.

Thanked: 84I've lapped mine on 300 then 600 grit wet'n'dry. It is very smooth, about the same as the WoA but it looks "deeper" wet if that makes sense. It is very dark grey when dry and very pretty swirly black wet. It sounds very hard wet you rung a razor over it but causes no damage to the edge when you do so, so thats good I supose!
Sorry for my poor descriptive comments.
It's mica that does the cutting. I'll sort out some wet and dry pictures soon and pictures of the box.
The guy from Inigo Jones rang to ask how "we" were getting on with them. He knew they were a final polisher (I think it may just about be) and probably of interest to us straight users.
He's keen to hear from us.
