Yeah, that is my concern. Anyone not up on their naguras could run the risk of contaminating a fine hone with lower grit nagura slurry.

The way I see it then, the naguras are just a slurry-based approach to intermediate honing. Almost like natural paste.

    They sound interesting.

    James,

this is why Su-nashi is important for razor honing. Su can trap the slurry, unless you rinse very carefully. But contamination? All you have to do is whip up a nice honzan slurry, rinse it off, and your hone is clean.

Contaminating in the sense of thinking you are using a 30K asagi when in fact what is being used is a 10K nagura slurry. Like I said, not really an issue if you know your nagura by the sounds of it. But if you think it is a rubbing stone that releases the slurry of the hone you are rubbing it on, you could run into problems.

    Jim,
I know there are suita nakaymas, IIRC Seth used to own one, but majority are Tomae and Namito I believe.
I wanted to make sure this is clarified because of the concern of grit contamination, which I believe should not be an issue.

    I couldn't really say.

I know that the majority I've seen are Tomae, with lots of Aisa/Karasu and Suita, but I'm not really sure about Namito.

There are way more Tomae strata in the Honkuchi Naori than anything else, so any Kyoto mine is likely to produce more of them.

As for contamination, I think a little care goes a long way...

Jim thanks for the useful info.

    Here are my naguras:

    Mejiro

    Koma

    Used on Iwasaki Choice Nakayama:

    Used on 3 different razors.
    Set bevel on 1k Chosera.
The Naguras produced mixed slurry with the polishing stone.
Mejiro nagura very quickly removed the 1k scratches, then the Koma refined the scratches from Mejiro also pretty fast, finished on the polisher with light slurry.
All razors gave very smooth shaves.
