Thanked: 246Nope, haven't figured that out yet. I'm wondering if it might be a variety of sandstone?

Sandstone is easy. If you rub it with your hand or with another rock the particles of sand will come off depending how friable it is. Sandstone in general has a gritty feeling to it.

Thanked: 246Ah, didn't know if they were all that frangible. This one definitely will not give up particles from finger rubbing. And definitely doesn't feel gritty either. Very super silky smooth.

Ok so the "lydian stone" gold testing one I ordered. I just did a freshly hone razor on it. I went to an 8k then went on the unlapped side of the stone. (""Very flat stone) about 20 lapps. I forget. Then 50 on the lapped side. Had a hard time keeping it the stone covered with water. Honestly thought I screwed it up. Test shave straight off the stone on one half of my face. Very smooth velvet edge. Close shave. Second half I stropped. 10 on linen and 50 on leather. Edge improved even more. I received a outstanding shave. Irritation free. Very impressed and surprised.

Hoo Kay! I suckered for one. Anything better than a same sized Barber hone for that price is a winner!
Thanks!
~Richard
PS, remember when the Arkies were the only naturals most anyone knew about other than some barbers?
I do and Arkies were all we had in the early fifties in tri-hones at the butcher shop and country club kitchen. No Carborundum's allowed!Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Well I am a little bit wondering on this so-called Lydian stones. Never heard of a material or a rock called Lydian.
Normally the gold test- or touchstones are made from black arkansas stone. I have two teststones that are clearly surgical black arks.
One of them I got from the company Müller in germany and I spoke with the owner a lot about these stones and aqcuired one there. They import the black Arkansas directly from Hot springs and cut them into whetstones and very small gold touchstones.
So are you really sure that your Lydian hone is not a "simple" black ark?

I personally don't know. It is a extremely hard stone but as you say it could be. If it is I'm impressed. I have a black ark I'm trying to lap so I can use it. My touch stone is jet black
