The Shaptons are top notch and fairly easy to use IMO, and a DMT 8C works great on them. I have 2-4-6-8-16 and will probably add a couple more eventually...

I am considering the naniwa setup.. what doe you feel would last the longest? I guess I'm trying to think of what ever i get as an investment rather then a beginners setup... something that i will still appreciate in years to come.
I know its not an easy answer... and if i ask 10 people i will get 10 answers however with ever question it helps me decide what i'm going to be happy with.
You mentioned the 16k glass stones can give a slightly harsh edge.. with a .5 diamond spray will that harshness go away?
I don't think i the Norton setup is what i'm looking for..

You see, Brighty. Ask 3 people for the perfect honing system and you will get 4 different answers.(at least! )
But if you ask a hundred people, it probably comes down to 4 or 5 systems that are considered the best.
Now all of these will work perfectly and it only comes down to your choice.
The honing systems generally believed to be perfectly capable of producing great results are
- Naniwa Superstone
- Naniwa Chosera (a little controversial, though)
- Shapton Professional
- Shapton Glasstone
- Norton
Choose one of these, and be sure that hundreds of people used exactly the same system
with fantastic results. You can be sure it is not your system that screws up

and a restoration once in a while. I have my Naniwa Super 8.000 for 2-3 years now,
and use it often, very often. On straights as well as knives. I have "only" the 10mm Version
and still got at least 8mm left!
As long as you do not excessively lapp your stones all of them will last a very long time
You mentioned the 16k glass stones can give a slightly harsh edge.. with a .5 diamond spray will that harshness go away
If the harshness does not come from the stone itself (which would be very faint then),
but from major honing imperfections, the 0,5µm will be able to mask these only a little.
But generally yes, the 0.5µm diamond makes almost any edge perfect.
And with the 16k you can experiment, wether or nor you like the edge with our without the diamond.
I consider the Shapton Glasstones the Apple of sharpening.
It´s prestigious, has an appealing and timeless design
and you can buy unnecessary equippment for an unnatural amount of money.
But you like it!
Shapton = Steve Jobs?

Like I said, Shapton offers equippment that matches the design and the prestige of the stones. But like with Apple,
the equippment can be bought someplace else for much less. It won´t be designed for the Shaptons (thus will not match their flare)
you can see the difference immidiately, but they will perform equally. So you can decide to spend 70Bucks for a stone holder that spreads the Shapton feeling,
or you buy a simple stoneholder like this.
I use the exact same holder for my Shaptons and it works perfectly fine. Yet I do not know if your vendor carries these.
Or do you already own one?
your not an apple fan are you!

I have two Shaptons, 16K and 30K. When I use them, I just sit them on top of another stone (to gain height) and separate the two stones with a paper towel. I've never needed or missed the stone holder and saved 70 bucks.
