Jeltz has been getting nice results going from the 6k King to this stone. I've not got this stone but going to my purple slate from AJ from the king 6k works. Whilst AJ has estimated them around 15k others have leaned towards 12k, 8k and below. If you do end up with an exceptionally fine example that makes the jump from 8k seems too much, do a happy dance.

I've just decided it will be an ok jump as long as I can get the one stone honing lyn does down. Thanks for the advice guys.

I picked up a set of the three hones, and have been playing with them for a few days now. I have found my sweet spot to be chosera 1k, 5k Naniwa ss, 8k Naniwa ss, then i go through a progression of the three stones DT, LW, WT, this is of course modified based on the current state of the razor. Wicked edges and buttery shaves. Depending on the blade I have found that the LW and WT finish different blades better so I test both and then decide which of the two to stop at for each individual blade. I also tried a lather on both stones and have found it to work well for some and not for others. I have not tried oil yet still pondering if i want to even attempt that route. These stones seem to have quite a bit of versatility to them with many options to work with. Glen's Pigtail strokes do seem to help allot when going from the 8k Naniwa to the DT. All in all I like the shaves off these stones so far and enjoy experimenting with them.

Instead of oil, have you considered Smith's honing solution? I've been using it on an Arkie that I recently acquired and really like it. I haven't tried it on any of these Welsh stones yet, but that's definitely my next step.

It's also good to hear another success story with these stones.

I've been using GT85 which is similar to WD40 but with PTFE added. It works well but I have also used mineral oil on my DT and that worked well too.

This is probably a terrible question but how necessary would y'all say the slurry stones are? (I understand a lot of this is personal preference and opinions so share your opinion)

I don't have slurry stones for mine, and it really isn't an issue. When I want to use slurry, which isn't that often, I use a credit card sized DMT600 to raise a little.

Also, I refinished a 9/16" Wusthof razor on my WT two nights ago using Smith's honing solution instead of water, and the resulting edge was very very keen. It wasn't as smooth as the edges that I've gotten from water only, though. Then again, it could just be the razor. My Wusthofs get sharper than any of my other razors and feel a little harsh when they're fresh off the stones.

So far, I have done a ton of finish work on this stone just using a generic nagura stone for a light slurry or the slurry stone that came with mine. 15 No pressure X strokes with slurry followed by 10 no pressure X strokes seems to be my sweet spot across the board.

    Have fun.

Thanks guys. I've been eyeing the tri hone set and figure it may be worth saving a few bucks and just going without the included slurry stones.

I retract that statement. The only tri hone set without slurry stones contains stones that are 4"X 1 3/8". I will be talking to the wife for a while explaining the extra money.
