Thread: Welsh Thuringian

It arrived and I compared it to the Dragon's Tongue I received from Inigo Jones a while back. The two are quite similar in appearance and feel. Looking down at the surface it's hard to tell them apart.

However, the Welsh Thuri is very very hard - much harder than DT and equivalent to a very hard JNat. Not Thurigian-like at all. Just very very hard slate.
Trying to raise a slurry using the slurry stone took a lot of effort and I could only raise a little bit.

The slurry is whiter than my DT, which raises a grey slurry.

Performance? Slow cutter.

They are not Thuringians. They might be something that come from Germany or a country around there, but not Thuringians.

Concerning the nomenclature, I vote for Cambrian Hone!

Couldn't agree more - the continued link to Thuringian is un-necessary and confusing and judging from the good reviews they are getting , the hones are likely to be around for some time, so a recognised name would be useful.

What do you think will bring moremoney to seller? Hone which has in it's name link to well known and expensive hone or new name hone?

ha-ha! I like that! I guess I was originally thinking about being fair to Wales, so it really depends on whether the seller prefers to be even-handed or full-fisted!

I shouldn't joke, really - he is quite a nice guy and I hope he knows I'm only teasing if he reads this! (although I'm not teasing about being completely baffled by his grit-ratings and how other people think they can hone by counting laps on these hones - after all, forget the numbers - when it's done, it's done, couldn't be any easier than that!).

I have no problem with hones themselves as I think they are probably decent hones (yep I do not have one of those yet therefore only from reports). Only with that confusing naming of them. Is there any other viable explanation about it?

I ended up with one of the Indigo Jones Boxed Dragon's Tongue hones in a trade, haven't had time to really test it against the AJ one yet, maybe tonight

I would be really interested in your findings to this Glen.

I have just started using my WT with Blue green Escher slurry ( from a slurry stone) and it's producing wonderful edges; sharp and smooth. Much better than anything else from the WT. The slurry comes up very quickly from the Escher, quite a contrast to the super hard WT.

40 X strokes on slurry then a slow dilute ( rinsing the blade instead of water drops) and then 40 on water have shown very consistent results. Especially on my Thiers Issard super gnome blade which hates almost every other hone I have, lol!
