Again I took my cnat shave ready edge to tomo nagura and tried to hone until the nagura breaks down and polishes the edge. used light x strokes (heavy strokes don't work tried that).
the edge got worse and worse as I kept going. I think I was over honing it or something.
50 laps on my cnat brought it back to shave ready.
why is it so easy for me to hone on the cnat and impossible on the Ozuku?

Thanked: 2591You need to stop using the cnat and figure out how to get from 8k to Ozuko
I am still think you are trying to get the best edge "right here and right" now, and the execution is lacking.
After the 8k how many dilutions with Mejiro do you do before you go for tomonagura slurry? How long do you work the Mejiro slurry?Stefan

I am not trying to get the best edge right away but I am just surprised why I can consistently manage to get a better edge from an inferior hone.
this is what I tried once: coming from the cnat (not 8k unfortunately) I did 30 laps Mejiro thick slurry semi-light strokes, then diluted the slurry got rid of some of it and did another 30 laps x strokes semi-light.
I tested by shaving body hair: the edge had gotten significantly duller than cnat. but I proceeded: tomo nagura 30 light strokes. then water only and another 10 very light x strokes on water only.
the tomo nagura and plain water had sharpened the edge significantly, but it was still not as keen as the cnat. not to mention I scratched my hone again

Thanked: 2591As I mentioned in the beginning of the thread you will need to do more work to get from 8k to a good edge form the Jnat. 30 semi light strokes will not break down the mejiro slurry enough at all, and you need to do 2-3 full dilutions before you go to tmonagura to get any result. The Cnat edge is finer than what you get from Mejiro that was not broken down well, that is why you felt the edge degraded. The Tomonagura then improved the edge as it should since it was harder stone than the nagura, but to overcome the incomplete mejiro stage you would have needed to do a few dilutions with the tmonagura. Ina a sense honing on a Jnat from lower grits synthetics a is an exercise of patience and repetition.
