Don't even point out that the improvment over the Norton 8k is probably 1-2% and you take all this time and $$$$

Again I took my cnat shave ready edge to tomo nagura and tried to hone until the nagura breaks down and polishes the edge. used light x strokes (heavy strokes don't work tried that).
the edge got worse and worse as I kept going. I think I was over honing it or something.
50 laps on my cnat brought it back to shave ready.

why is it so easy for me to hone on the cnat and impossible on the Ozuku?

You need to stop using the cnat and figure out how to get from 8k to Ozuko
I am still think you are trying to get the best edge "right here and right" now, and the execution is lacking.
After the 8k how many dilutions with Mejiro do you do before you go for tomonagura slurry? How long do you work the Mejiro slurry?

I am not trying to get the best edge right away but I am just surprised why I can consistently manage to get a better edge from an inferior hone.

this is what I tried once: coming from the cnat (not 8k unfortunately) I did 30 laps Mejiro thick slurry semi-light strokes, then diluted the slurry got rid of some of it and did another 30 laps x strokes semi-light.

I tested by shaving body hair: the edge had gotten significantly duller than cnat. but I proceeded: tomo nagura 30 light strokes. then water only and another 10 very light x strokes on water only.

the tomo nagura and plain water had sharpened the edge significantly, but it was still not as keen as the cnat. not to mention I scratched my hone again

As I mentioned in the beginning of the thread you will need to do more work to get from 8k to a good edge form the Jnat. 30 semi light strokes will not break down the mejiro slurry enough at all, and you need to do 2-3 full dilutions before you go to tmonagura to get any result. The Cnat edge is finer than what you get from Mejiro that was not broken down well, that is why you felt the edge degraded. The Tomonagura then improved the edge as it should since it was harder stone than the nagura, but to overcome the incomplete mejiro stage you would have needed to do a few dilutions with the tmonagura. Ina a sense honing on a Jnat from lower grits synthetics a is an exercise of patience and repetition.

so what should I try this time?
8k then mejiro (dilute it many times) ?
should I use the weight of the razor or more or less pressure?

    Thanks

This you have to experiment with, 2 may be 3 dilutions. Do you have a scope to look at the bevels? If you have proper magnification you can follow the progress and determine very quickly what to do to improve your work.

this is also something to play with, the weight of the blade should be enough IMO.

I have much success with Chosera 1k, 3k, BBW, Norton 8k, strop and shave test. If it shaves smoothly, you should only need a few super light strokes on a good finisher to refine the smooth shaving 8k edge. After that, a proper stropping will give you a very nice shave. Your goal should be a smooth shave off the 8k.

Try not to make it too complicated and don't spend a small fortune on hones like I did. It's not necessary.

    UPDATE:

I just used Botan and Kenjo nagura on the stone and irm pressure from the hand, could see the slurry changing color. I refreshed the slurry when it got grey, (kept some of the old slurry) with this approach I got good results from Botan and Kenjo but did not work as well on the mejiro.

by the way mainaman: can you please tell me how sharp the edge should be at the end of each slurry? I have no idea about that. how sharp should it be after you are done with Mejiro and you are ready to go to tomo nagura?

    Thanks
    Dan
