Tell you what, a guy who is really into j-nats posted that you should watch how you pick them up to avoid contaminating them with the natural oils from your skin. The same stuff we condition our strops with when we palm rub. IIRC he also may have suggested that distilled water doesn't have chlorine and what not but I use tap water. I do make sure to handle my hones on the sides rather than the honing surface.

i did some honing tonight. All 3 were off a 1k and did the same progression. There shown on the stone they were honed on. I have to say the edges are among the sharpest i have gotten honing, and i get some sharp edges. Cant wait to test shave.

Thanked: 443Sometimes I pimp my water with a tiny bit of dish soap (Ivory) to wipe out the surface tension. This puts the metal just an eensy closer to the grits. Mostly I do that with my Thuri, though; never with coticules. The theory may work better with some hones than with others--if in fact it works at all. I'd love to hear more thoughts on this, but maybe off in a new thread.

Thanked: 443Nick--your 1st and 3rd cotis are gorgeous, like well-cared-for old ivory. I hope they hone as good as they look!
