I do not know what Jnats you have, but if they are like mine an escher will never come close to the edge you can get off it. Perhaps that is why you find it a bit "meh".

I have been trough 8 different Eschers including Y/G, I am yet to find one that can get me an edge that is anywhere close to my Jnat finisher.

Well, now that the escher is settled in, I can get a pretty good shaving edge. But I have two japanese stones that are finer, one if left alone (i.e, never scuffed on a surface) will brighten the polish of the escher at least a full step. In the end, the escher will almost certainly go down the road, and I will just go back to using it with tomonagura off the coticule and then on clear water.

Poor me ..... maxed out with a y/g escher ..... I'm just gonna have to settle for the substandard edge I've been getting great shaves with the past few years .....

Well, any of us who refuse to go on to powders or sprays after the stones are essentially doing that. Just picking a level where we'll stop, or where we're satisfied, and ignoring the logical conclusion that we're spending a lot of money sticking to a stone only principle.

In reality, if we all just went with a $75 synthetic stone and followed with 0.5 or 0.3 chromium oxide, we'd have an edge that was more keen and very comfortable. Especially if we spent as much time and thought on it as we do with natural stones.

I could not defend the same thing as I do (the stones only) to a rational thinking person who just wanted a sharp razor with which to functionally shave.

Shsssh let's keep that between us. New guys ought to have to spend at least as many $ as we did to figure that out.

CBN goes up to 160,000 grit.......

I am getting great edge off the hone, never felt the need to go to the super fine grits, IMO those are crutches.

CBN is fine stuff indeed. As are other pastes and powders.

Sometimes I find that the chase of that stellar edge is more than half the hobby for me though.
Be it on a JNat, other naturals, synths of various characteristica or simply some lapping film.
I can spend entire evenings over some hone to really try to discover its true potential.
It's great fun when one hits that peak!

When you finally hit the point in chasing the edge to realize that it is actually a combination of things coming together to bring forth a WOW edge, is when you realize there is no best stone or hone...

Each razor and face are going to have a perfect combination on the hones that will bring forth an edge that is the max that razor can give, chasing the edge is to find that combination...

While this is about natural stones, as a member on a budget, I can’t afford to ‘play’!

I use a King 1200, Norton 4/8 and a Naniwa 12k. As I’ve been told in person by Glen Quote: Anything above the 8k is BS! After that it’s all personal preference!

I’ve found that very true!

Robert (pinklather) has used his expensive Gucci stones for some razors we’ve exchanged for honing, and personally I don’t ‘prefer’ the buttery smooth feel, I like a blade a little on what Robert refers to as ‘crispy’! The Naniwa 12k for me gives the perfect feel! It’s not harsh at all its just right!
