I heard somewhere that a Hart will skip across a Zulu like a flat stone across a lake. One fella got 17 skips off an 8 inch stone.

I used to have that problem with specific Jnat. A good lapping, and less water was the ticket. I agree with Stefan, Hart should hone up like any other blade. These Zulu hones are like glass. Very fine and very smooth.

Sorry, I was just having a little fun. Stefan of course answered the question seriously.

I may have jumped the gun on my assessment of the zulu grey, even though the razors I honed on it shaved well. After further testing, [especially on Friodurs,Revisors and Erns], I must profess my continuing loyalty to my 3 jnats for the ultimate shave ready edges. The Nakayama Maruichi Asagi from Old_School, the Ozuku Sunashi Suita from Maksim Enevoldsen and an un-named jnat finisher I got from Sham.

It may well be that I have not yet figured out the best method for using the zulu grey. It is fairly new to most of us. I have tried various slurries on this stone and will continue to experiment with it. I will not give up on any stone I have. In 45 years I have never sold a razor or a stone and I guess I am a hoarder. I am also a believer so I will keep on using the zulu. The secret may well lie in the sequence of my progression. Time will tell.

If I am reading you right Jerry, your jnats are a fit finer & those particular razors are hard enough to handle them. I'm going to make an effort here in the next few days to play around with my Zulu to see where it falls with my naturals on water. I am interested in comparing it to my Nakayama Asagi myself. Problem for me is that it can take me months and months to figure out the ends and outs of a particular stone. Good part is that I have a handful of razors in a cup that need a touch-up hone, 10x on GS 16K didn't bring it back. If I run out of them, I'll do some freebie honings again...

I like the edge from the zulu and I think it is a good finisher. I have two Sheffields that need some finish work and this is a good opportunity to see how they turn out on the zulu. I have a replacement USB scope coming in the mail so I will be doing an edge comparison in the next week or two.

Bottom line: I like the Zulu Grey.
