Thread: Identify this stone please

Do you use water or oil? I never used either style stones.

In this picture I can see through the top. Try wetting both sides and then check if you can look through it.

is the stone all black i think i can see some grey spec's on the side of the stone and how hard is the stone can you scratch the stone with a nail ?

It does have a tint of grey.

can you post some pic's of the box and the stone wet ?

It almost looks like a marble tile that I used to lap stones before I got my DMT, but my experience with stones is limited.

Yep..not a clue. If I was forced to guess, I'd guess that it's a piece of tinted glass. But it doesn't look like glass from the side view...There it looks like ceramic. And in the top view pic I'd also guess ceramic. And in another view, I'd guess floor tile. Guess you're just gonna have to learn to hone, and then use it and tell us if it was any good or not.

It actually looks like black granite to me. Very similar to surface plates used in machine shops. Could be a black granite lapping plate.https://www.google.com/search?q=blac...DIfa0QGAloD4Cg

After taking a closer look at the photo where you can see through it, I am going to have to change my vote to glass hone plate!

Compare it with you other hone first. Otherwise this is just guess work. It could be glass hone, translucent ark, manmade hone .... Does it slurry easily, does clurry improvec honing, what colour is the slurry, does it smell of something?
