Thanked: 51Shuobudani type 100 from JNS?
Has anyone bought one of these stones from JNS? I'm interested in giving a JNAT a try and they're reasonably priced and are billed as good for polishing razor bevels. I know a lot of people have bought from Maksim, so I know he's a reputable seller. I'm asking more about the specific stone and the size they come in.

I have that exact same one and I love it. It's smaller than most JNATs but it's good quality. It's a very hard stone and very smooth.
Don't forget to order a tomo nagura along with it, the stone and that tomo nagura is all you need for touchups and final polishing, if you want to go from bevel set to polishing a set of asano naguras is recommended.
I love the edges I get from that stone, very smooth and very sharp and I found it much easier to use than for instance a Coticule.
I always finish with a light slurry as water only feels like skipping and dragging the edge along but a light slurry will give just enough lubrication to smoothly slide over the stone and the result is great.
I bought it as a first JNAT but haven't felt the need to upgrade yet as I like this size and love the sharp smooth edges it give me and so I do not have another JNAT to compare this with.
Maksim is a very pleasant person to do business with and his shipment is very fast, took 26 hours for the stones to be delivered to my door in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

What a coincidence to see this thread! I actually just bought a Type 100 from Maksim today. I recently shaved with a JNAT edge for the first time & loved it. I have been a coticule guy up till now, so I wanted to give JNATS a try but not spend too much money. I emailed Maksim and he said that the Type 100 will do everything that a bigger, more expensive stone will, so I am going to give it a shot!
I also ordered the set of 2 Asano Nagura stones with it (Tenjyou and Mejiro) so that I can do a "mini-progression"...This is my first foray into the world of JNATS, so I have everything to learn!! I will be sure to post my experiences/questions as I begin to use the stone..-JP-

Absolutely. Like I said I have some experience with coticules, but NONE with JNATS. So I know I'll be flying blind for the first few times I use it. I am sure I'll have plenty of questions as I go!!
ps - Maksim is a pleasure to deal with. I emailed him & told him I was on a budget, and was interested in the Shoubudani Type 100. He assured me that it's a very capable stone, so I'm very excited to receive it!! I told him I just starting out & wanted to get my feet wet, and he recommended the Type 100 as a great starter stone...Last edited by jpcwon; 03-10-2013 at 06:09 PM.

Thanked: 51If you don't mind me asking, how much did all that come to after adding the asano naguras?

@jpcwon; don't worry, you'll love it. The very first time I used it I already had great success with that stone and it gave me very smooth edges, almost as smooth as a Coticule but much sharper and after using Coticules for a while also easier to learn how to use it.
Besides the asano naguras, did you order the tomo nagura with it? That one is the most important of all the naguras so I hope you didn't forget to order one. You can easily go without the asano naguras if you use it as a finisher or touchup stone but I wouldn't want to be without the tomo. The best edges though you get (IMO and IME) with the full asano -> tomo progression.
If you have the botan too you can easily go from bevel setting to finishing on the same base stone.
When you get the stone lap it very smooth, it's a very hard stone so you will not have to do that again for a very long time (unless you also use it for knives and chisels, but I lapped the backside especially for that).

Puerco,
I did order the tomo nagura with it as well as the 2 Asano stones, for a total of 3 nagura. I have a Chosera 1k that I use to set bevels, so that's taken care of. As I undersatnd it, I should be able to use the 3 nagura stones to do a progression, right? Which order do I use the stones, would it be Mejiro, Tenjyou, then tomo? Or Tenjyou, Mejiro then Tomo?
I am very excited. I've only shaved with a JNAT edge once, and that's all it took for me to know that I had to have one!!
ps- I have a DMT 325 and an Atoma 1200 to lap it, so I should be good there...Last edited by jpcwon; 03-10-2013 at 11:22 PM.

Coarse to fine; Botan -> Tenjyou -> Mejiro -> Koma -> tomonagura.
I like to go from 1K to botan, teniyou, mejiro to tomo as MY teniyou and mejiro naguras are quite fine so you may want to use something in between the 1K and teniyou.
Don't forget to lap/prepare your tomo nagura or it could easily scratch your base stone, see this clip: .
I think Alx Gilmore posted that clip.
