One interesting fact although it doesnt tell the whole story is the SG 20k is .5 micron particles, as opposed the the shapton 30k is .49. So particle wise they are essentially the same. I never used the shapton 30k so I have nothing to say about it.

To refresh the conversation a little...the price of nice Eschers has gone through the roof. I get it, they are beautiful stones and they ain't makin' them anymore....so as much as some of us honettes would like an Escher it is out of reach and the SG synthetic stone is a realistic option for a proven finisher. Makes me a little sad though.

I snagged one for what i though was a high price last year, its higher now though. So thru the roof is a relative term.

Agreed, 200 clams more than a SG for about half the size...that would be through the roof for me...others and I have no malice towards them can drop 5 or 600 dollars on a boxed Escher with little effect on their overall quality of life...that is the way of the world. So I guess once you get through the roof you just keep going....then comes in another catchphrase, sky's the limit.

Ive used and sold a few thuris. Some of them are very good and could be had under $100. Ebay can be a place to find some of these although I havent looked in a while so maybe things have changed. You can get a great Jnat and nagura set for 100 bucks. It wont be the biggest, but will finish better than the SG 20k IMO. Im not selling anything but JNS has shubodani 100, its $70. Deal and great finisher. You can use a dmt plate to finish if you dont want the nagura set. Its your choice of course, but you dont have to drop whatever your doing to get a good edge on your razor.

I know little to nothing about mfg of stones but, I think the binder has as important an impact on the characteristics of the stone as the size of the grit. Also, whether the abrasive is close in size, I'm not at all sure the 30k and the 20k are made with the same material ? Maybe, maybe not. We could ask the companies that make them but my guess is they ain't sayin'.

Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice on this thread. I ended up getting an escher via the classified on this site, was about $aud 230, so close to 100 cheaper than the suehiro 20k with delivery. Sounds like the suehiro is a great stone though, would have spent the extra if I hadn't seen the escher come up for sale.

That's what I thought. Isn't a dmt a bit too much for a jnat or no?
Doesn't slurry make it a rougher grit stone? Not finer? Wouldn't it be better to finish on water?
