ncraigtrn, you are a glutton for punishment. Hirlau, "Look! a DONUT!!"
Honestly, I think we have more time than most others to pursue the hobby!
Some of us, more than others!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.

Thanked: 10I finish the hone with iron-oxide (0.1 micron) on balsa to help satisfy my OCD. Then I go to a leather strop, 100 strokes each side, flat on a table to avoid putting a convex edge on it . I don't recommend using iron-ox, flat stropping, or suggest it makes a difference in the shave. But when I look at the bevel with my 60X loupe, I see what makes me satisfied with my edges. Not to mention a smooth shave. We each have our own methods which have evolved from trial and error, science, input from others, and positive results that have enforced the methods that got us where we are. It might change tomorrow, or maybe not.
Thanks Tim for your input. Sometimes I also use tape(s) when stropping, depending on whether I hone off the spine or above it.

Thanked: 3164Hirlau, I have a sneaking suspicion that - in the old days - you would have come close to being burnt at the stake for razor heresy.
Oh no, in the old days they didn't like heretics. In fact, in the old days they didn't have any because they burnt them all.
Make no mistake - they made those fires really hot in the old days.
In the old days, they only needed one razor and one hone - for the entire village. They didn't have RAD in the old days.
How do I know all this? Simple. JimmyHAD told me. He was there... HAR!
Regards,

Have to say, this is one of the more interesting threads I have read in some time. It is refreshing to see all the different ideas and philosophies people have when it comes to the age-old task of "shaving".
Not surprisingly, the same concepts apply to just about every hobby or past time. Some guys take things to very elevated levels regardless of what the activity is (firearms & shooting is another example of what I mean here), others accept it at face value (no pun intended).
It is all great fun to read; it helps me to get a better understanding of the finer points of the discipline in question.
For me?? Pretty simple and old school-
Shave until the razor doesn't feel as nice as I think it should. When that happens, crack out the stone(s) of choice, be it coticule, Naniwa, slate..what have you, rub blade on rock(s) in a fashion which has proven to work over the years, strop...razor feels nice once more.
Repeat as needed. Yeah...simple but it does work!!Last edited by Phoenix51; 07-19-2014 at 12:10 PM.

And so another thread with the word 'tape' has been hijacked and killed with BS! As it must be.
Lovely time had by all, Gents!"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
I rest my case.
