I have a small black Arkansas, I think it's about 6 x 2. It's just a pup compared to Steel's beautiful beast up there ^^^. I really enjoy it and have been spending some quality time learning it's secrets over the last few months with some great coaching from Steel. (But lately I have a yellow/green thuringian that's been holding my attention.) One thing I noticed is that after really studying the novaculite stones, practicing a lot, is my sense of pressure improved. And that improvement is definitely transferable to other types of hones.

Last night I got to a W&B Special, this blade had/has a bit of a wonky bevel. I'm ok with it, plus the edge had a slight smile so I left all alone. Honed this with out tape as I normally do. Started with tape and it made a micro bevel which was noticeable, I didn't like it so went bare.
Stones, 2k, 5k, 8k, Kuromaku and 12k Nani SS.

A nice vintage GENCO bevel set on Chosera 1K switch to natural approx 3-4K grit then to vintage coticule.
Progress to a much finer AND much slower, man made vintage coticule with soapy water.
Final finish on vintage Y/G thuri with bark on the backside. Slurry raised w/ Y/G rubber stone. Great little shavers with good steel. Have a nice day!

Just honed up my favourite shaver. W&B Brass Frameback.
The lack of heel makes it awkward to hone but I enjoy awkward .
1k then a full progression with no dilutions.
The edges I get from this little blade are breath taking ..
Cheers guys ..

Thanked: 133Testing out new tomo. Wanted to try tomo but harder than my other(other tomo decently soft but very nice finish). This tomo is ozuku and feels a bit softer than my oozuku which I am happy with (didn't want it to be harder). Razor is a Le Grelot with hardly any hone wear, probably getting it rescaled with something nice later on. Looks like tomo might have scratched base stone, so I rounded the corners on it. Will test it some more, I think it is soft enough it shouldn't scratch stone if I am careful with pressure.

JG Parker, this is by far the easiest near wedge I have honed to date. 1k through 8k kuromaku 12k naniwa ss. Took a wonderful edge and can't wait for test shave tomorrow.Nothing is fool proof, to a sufficiently talented fool...

Well, That did not take long. The Wester began to back-up in about 6 strokes.
Went 30 on the Red Dog.
It will likely be a waste of time, but I have never used this Dark Blue Escher since I obtained it from Geezer. Curiously, this slurry stone I swapped Jimmyhad out of (somehow) works great with it.
Is it me, or are thurrys picky about their slurry-stone partners?
We may never know.
Anyway, it seems to me that the dark Blue is not as fine as the Blue-green. I sortof wonder if it improved my 12k or not.
A few strokes did not feel right, flushed all the slurry off.
Still not what I wanted, so I quit.
Perhaps I should flatten it.
Now to go to the stropping subforum!
