Today's honing was a special one. My newest stone with my oldest razor. This is the first straight razor I ever bought. I shaved with it for months before getting an old sheffield PIF'D to me.

It had a double bevel on it.

I took the edge and killed it vigorously against the side of the pyrennes. Set the bevel on the pyrennes and then proceeded to a slurried bbw. Got the bevel shiny and where it felt good on the TPT. Checked the loupe. Admittedly I knew it wasn't going to get any better in any reasonable amount of time so I added a layer of tape and did some light slurry back and forth strokes diluting to very very faint slurry and x strokes to finish. I think I'm in for a good shave.

Bbw are very slow... but the size of this monster 200x60 slab helps a lot.

Talk about irritation free... I love that about belgian stones.

7 Bismarks so far this week although I know there are a few more coming in over the next few days.

Thanks Richard! I know the scopes aren't a necessity to hone a razor but they sure are a nice tool to have in your arsenal to help you get the best edges you can.

    Holiday Honing Fun!

I brought my mum on a holiday to the Gold Coast. Found her a room on a floor far far away, and set about preparing some razors for my next 12 months away from the hones. I'll be taking a little coti or two to maintain them, but this was my time to make sure they're as good as they're gonna get.

And the standout hone of today is a Carborundum GBRH. This Wosty had been finished on an Asagi, but the edge felt a little underdone, so 20 strokes with slurry followed by another 15 with medium-light pressure to finish. And possibly the most buttery shave I've ever had with this razor.

One of the great things of a road trip - you can bring as many hones as you like! Note, in Australia we really do drive upside down.

These three needed a little time on the Zulu Gray and some stropping after reskinning them all. Tried out my new board strop. Like it quite well.
Managed to restore the edges they came with, which were all quite nice still.

My personal SOTD razor, 12 laps on French oil stone followed by 100 laps on Kanayama 70.. see SOTD results

    But wait here is more..
A very fine Scottish oil hone with cherry and mahogany furniture.

Final oil finish for a Wusthof SS works well. Enjoy
