Thread: Hone of the Day

I still had 3 vintage Henckels I had to hone up and finally took 'em to the stones.
Set the bevel on a Coticule with heavy slurry and continued with a Naniwa progressions 5K - 8K - 12K, no idea about my laps, just honing until it feels right and done
Finished on a dark blue Thuringer hone, I did something different this time, I build up a nice slurry, not too thick, not too thin and did a lot of work on it.
Did half strokes, circles and x-strokes, I finished on a medium to thin slurry.
Shaves were outstanding, I think this is my favorite method as of late, always good edges.
These Thuringer edges are gooooood, actually nice and smooth too.
Next I will try a light green Thuringer to see if there are any noticeable difference on my face.

Just honed up 2 blades.
The T.I Spartacus had a truly astounding edge on it but I spotted a microchip , which didn't affect the shave but still , it had to go.
The Kropp 7/8ths I have been honing and shaving with for a few weeks now. I'm not sure if the steel is kinda crap or what because I cannot get a super killer next level type edge on it. I will not give up though.
And yes, that is a 450g Botan

Suuuurrrrrre Give it to Glen, he'll hone anything
You know as I was honing this one, I thought to myself about those people that say, "Well back in the day they just honed and shaved, they didn't worry about it being perfect like we all do today"
Well, there might be more truth to that then most think, see beside the chips and uneven bevel on this, the last 1inch or so of the heel had never been set..
Took some time to bring the heel into play since the blade had a bit of a warp that needed to be worked around, but after some honing gymnastics, I got a nice even small bevel.. After that it was easy
Chosera 1-5-10 Select Coticule finish
I took some closer shots of the heel to show the complete bevel now, that was never there all these years
Hone on and Merry Christmas Gentlemen"No amount of money spent on a Stone can ever replace the value of the time it takes learning to use it properly"
Very Respectfully - Glen

Well, Zak made a really interesting thread about the grinding ans street-sharpening process back in the early XIX, but I can't find it here ..
I tried to translate it several years ago :

Tonight I sorted out this Dovo SS .
It was tapered from years of my honing. I straightened it out and got the bevel to act as it should.
After all that work I had to go synthetic for quick finish, although I finished with an Escher.
Really pleased at the end .. Cheers.
