Absolutey. The instructions from the vintage makers to keep the blade virtually flat on the face was obviously considering a properly sharp razor.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Looking back. You are both correct. I didnt adjust my pressure with shaving. And I used a true wedge, which is not my normal.
Actually the weepers hurt. I never had shaved off of a 12K before. I still have much to learn. Keep the advise coming.
Pre March 2016 I used Chosera 1K, 5K, then a natural finisher. The SN8K and SS12K are new to me.
A pile of finishers with no way to maximize them seemed pointless.

One thing at a time, Johnathan! If you change several things at once with subpar results, which ones were wrong? You may well be overhoning at the 8k level. Everything after that is just making it worse?
Takes time and work/experience. A bit at a time. All of us are always learning! No end to it, I think!

    Sometimes, less is best!

Single homogeneous bevel with less striations and no microchips or rolled edges. Jointed the edge at 1&5K.
Please tell me what to look or feel for to rule out overhoning at the 8K level.

Tom, I really appreciate the direction from you and the other members.
In all honesty, I have yet to reach out and progress knowingly, from hone to hone. No one has come to meets here who can say or demonstrate anything which works for me. I succeed using my own variation of Lynn's pyramid on the 4/8 Norton.
I do have a feel for how to modify my progression, but it is is by 'feel' only. For instance, if a blade is 'backing up' or feeling as it may be wire-edging, I do a few stropping strokes, Then go less onward.
All razors are different. I know I need to see the entire edge popping hairs off the 1k.
I know I need to feel the edge responding to the 4k and the 8k. Expanding or minimizing my strokes in the pyramid tell me what I have. A long 8k finish of 25 to 40 laps takes me to the finisher. I think I could benefit greatly by sitting with someone such as Glen, yet I am happy with where I arrive, sooner or later! A ton of razors under my belt. Without hand's on.
Still happy with my results. I will say that the Naniwa 12k has been a blessing. No doubt!
I use little magnification, just go by what I feel.
    My sad story!

    About the same here....
    By feel...
    Watched tons of videos.
Picked up a few tricks here n there from them, but all blades be they knives, chisels, ice augers, axes, ect.
all hone different. Just time and experience has been my best teacher....40 yrs. +Or- a year or two.

If you use magnification to see what you're doing, you won't overhone.... much

I used less pressure and did pyramids. I was not doing those before. Sort of cobbled honing. Then I realized I had the hones to do a proper progression.
Wow that works and I was done in 75% less time. So pictures to prove it.
    W&B finished on pink coticule.
    Genco finished on PHIG
    Clauss finished on Zulu Grey
    Boker finished on BBW.
I did regular pyramids with my 5K and 8K. Then small pyramids 8K & 12K. Thanks gentleman.
The difference is huge. Both in hone feel and shaveability .

I feel honing is usually straightforward. Sometimes simple as pie.
Getting a razor off the 1k in proper shape FOR the hones is the difficult part sometimes, esp as staightening other's mistakes out on old ones. Once that is accomplished properly, the rest comes easily (most of the time).
    YMMV
