I hone very many razors on average about 10 or 12 every week on a good week up to 20, I don't have the time or desire to mix naturals into my tried and tested progression of my synthetic lineup mostly Chosera with a Naniwa Snow White 8K and a Naniwa super stone 12K and finally a 20K Suehiro Gokumyo, 98% of what needs to be done happens on the 1K stone once you've mastered that stone the next level of refinement 3K, 5K, 8K, 12K, 20 is a very simple proccess, whenever I have a newbie around for a honing lesson I will spend most of our time talking about and using that 1K stone everthing else will eventually fall into place.

I didn't realize you honed so many razors each week for other people. That makes complete sense then that you'd go with a synthetic progression so that you're results are consistent. I know that when I started honing the people that were guiding me were constantly drumming into me the importance of a good bevel set before moving on to other stones. That's the best advice you can get when you are learning to hone. If the bevel is not set properly and you move up in stones you are wasting your time.

Here are some Nihon-kamisoris rescues. Not restorations. Bevel set on natural. A more stringent approach may be required. The middle one was a standout.

Different steel can require a different natural stone progression for best results.

Atypical applications of tape can help to re-strike the edge.

    Finishing on HG w/oil

Finishing on Mizu Asagi. They’ll never win a beauty show but they shave good. Great stones guy's, keep them coming.

It's ONLY chips on the toe part... but I have been working on the 1K Pro for near 1/2 hour and there's still a tiny bit left....... Sooo.... This will have to do for today:

    Maybe some commiserating will help:

Before and after on a prototype razor edge I'm working on made of M2 HSS. Dropped on soft linoleum. (Images attached backwards, oops).

Tested a Suehiro Gokumyo 20k after edge repair - progression here was DMT thru 8k then SG20k. Carbide tear-out, anyone? Forgive the slight moisture, didn't clean and dry well enough for that shot.

After my last shave with my Boker sway back, I noticed the edge was a bit off. So I decided to take it back to my 1x5 Y/G Thuri. I did 4 rounds of circles on the initial slurry and then did regular x strokes following 3 more dilutions until i was on pure water. Did approximately 20 rounds on each dilution. Also in the pic is a Krusius Bros. Edge Right that also needed touching up that I did the same routine on.

Urghle..... that's what my blade looked like, only under a 30x loupe!

Thanks, that was like deja-vu..... all over again!

Mine hit the hardwood floor/my slippers... Not sure what got it first, but I suspect it was the hardwood. All that silica in the polyurethane finish makes it like you dropped it on a natural hone!

I know you have the magnification cranked up on that last post of yours... but to me those carbides look awfully big?!?!

Right around 4 microns according to the measuring software. (And yes I calibrated it first, lol). Magnification is about 250x on my laptop screen - the actual distance covered in that frame from extreme left to right is about 1mm.
