Don't forget an Atoma 400 for lapping your stones. It is essential.

+ 1 on a diamond plate to lap stones. It doesn't have to be a diamond plate. You could use sandpaper on a countertop, but the plate will cost less in the long run if you continue at this for years.

Cost not considered ........ Chosera 1k, Norton 4/8, naniwa 12k. The plate could be the atoma, or the DMT D8C (less expensive) If you get the Norton single grit 4 & 8 there are advantages to that, though the cost is significantly more. They are 1" thick and will least as long as you do, or longer.

Of course you'll need a strop.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I started honing after about 6 months of shaving with a Naniwa 3k & 8k and the DMT D8c plate for lapping. Later I added a Naniwa 1k and also their 12k. I think that's all I'll ever need, except for good strops, of which I have a few.

This was an expensive thread to open. I now have a Naniwa SS 1000, Norton 4/8, DMT8C, and a stone holder on the way.

    Bad news: you did!
Good news: You can decide how deep it is (probably).

    No.

1k paper would NOT "be fine." Lots of beginners have destroyed lots of edges on sandpaper.

Only SOME Carborundums are appropriate for razors.

You cannot. The amount of repair work needed to repair the edge makes it pointless. If you need to set bevels on purchased razors, then a 1k hone should be your first investment and you might as well make it a good one.
