    Default Challenge accepted

Earlier this month tc challenged anyone to beat a Naniwa ss 12k edge with a Japanese natural stone. I gladly accepted his challenge, and I believe steve56 did as well. His razor arrived to me the other day and it's now time to put my money where my mouth is. First problem, which stone to use! I think I'll go with my trusty lime kiita(second from the left), the finest stone I own and see how he likes that.

The razor is a manaslu m500. One I've never tried, but am growing very attached to. I need to get it honed and in the mail before I decide I want it!

It did take a very nice edge. I'm going to test shave my cheek just to double check it's where I want it to be. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one of these on the Bay.

TC you are a Genius. I wonder how many people you will get to hone razors for you and for how long. I have to say it is the greatest plan ever.

Kidding aside I think it is an interesting challenge. The Naniwa 12K has almost a cult following. TC has been at it for a while and I expect that he has sampled many edges from some truly great and skilled hands.

That same thing crossed my mind. I just need to say a norton 8k is the best edge I've tried and nothing can beat it. Anyone up to my challenge?? Lol

Dats no challenge. Doing it in the same amount of time is more of a challenge

Well the kiita I have cuts insanely fast. Completely removes 1k stria in around 30 strokes. Then to the final polisher, which doesn't take that long either. But yes, the 12k is as fast as they come.

Hard to imagine such a stone would rate as a finisher but if it is you have an exceptionally unusual stone. Half your luck.

The kiita can be used as a finisher, but I use it to bridge the gap from the 1k to my lime kiita final polisher. The super fast kiita in question was purchased from Alex, and he has a video of a similar stone on YouTube. He took microscope pictures after doing a few strokes at a time. In his video the 1k stria disappeared after 22 strokes IIRC. It was rated at 5+ in both cutting speed and fineness. It seems like it just melts steel, even the hard Japanese steel.

Do a YouTube search for speed test kiita #29. I have that stone as well as a slightly larger one.

I still see 1k scratches there. Maybe needed more strokes

Also that honing method is a great way to hone a frown into a blade, especially with the finger on the spine like that. Too easy to apply excess localised pressure that way.
