I don't finish with a misty slurry - that doesn't make sense and runs counterproductive to every thing I know regarding slurry (loose particles, faster/deeper cutting, edge not as fine as when finished on pure water). In fact I take it a step further and, after pure water strokes move on to shave lather as a final finishing medium to lessen contact with blade and stone and make even shallower cuts. I only used the slurry to ensure the bevel was set and polish the razor up a bit.

This thing releases slurry way too easily to ever be polished or burnished, and as soon as I realized that I knew I'd be in for a learning experience. It's not as soft as the slurry stone you traded me a while back Solitarysoldier, but also not nearly as hard as the one I sent in return.

I asked Ardennes if they could send a hard one that doesn't slurry well, as that would probably best suit my needs. I guess that was too tall a task at the moment? Oh well.

Regarding slurry, I don't blame that in the least. I've been using slurry as a base on my Soft Ark and my PHIG for a long time. With the soft Ark and Phig, buy the time the coticule slurry is diluted away and I've moved on to water only strokes, and damage done by the loose slurry particles is worn off the edge. This could be where coticules, at least mine, differs from those other stones though. Their burnish isn't effected by the coticule slurry stone, they're too hard to release much if any grit. If anything it might enhance it, but I use the backside of those stones to be safe anyway. Maybe the coticule being used as the base is softer than the slurry stone? They seem to be in the same ball park though, I used them both to slurry the PHIG just to see how easy they release grit.

I dunno, if it fails the test I have in mind for it, maybe I'll try to polish/burnish it one good time before completely writing it off.

Marshal you could try making a micro bevel. I know it's not ideal but it will tell you if you have a stone that could finish. The misty slurry comment was purely joke. It's said if you can't reach desired keenness do misty slurry laps and then water only. Could you please post us a picture of the stone in question?

Actually, just happen to have a few I took on my phone, but...

Edit: rather than hijacking Magpie's thread, I think I'm gonna start one for this problem child. Derailed threads is another thing that makes me wanna chuck a hone at someone, so it'd be a bit hypocritical of me to do so!

Hehe, was trying to remove the attachment, but it's a pain to do from the phone.

    Edit: fix't it!

Add that to the list of things that make me want to throw a hone - my own bad coding.

I know that sorrow well. I had an incher, with a "twist" to the blade. I had to do aerobic acrobatics to make that thing shave!
