Thanked: 234Don't quote me on it, but I think as they go deeper and deeper into the mines, the properties of the rocks change - that makes sense to me, but I'm not geologist.

Thanked: 234Yer, I can't remember where I read it. Certainly my vintage and new BBWs are quite different in terms of the density of the garnets. There is probably quite a great variation in that still today. The coticule sides are different colours, much deeper yellow on the vintage.

Thanked: 286I finish water on coticule but when i have used yellow with light slurry to refresh it just does'nt seem to give me an ultra sharp edge i can get a shave able edge. I brought the yellow coti bout first thinking its all i'd need i'd been using norton 4k/8k then kitiyama as finishing hone along with some fine paste. When i first got my bout i used it on a shave ready razor i did 20 laps slurry then 20 laps water and i tryed it on a client at my barbers shop who comes in for a shave every week. The razor pulled instesd of shaveing i could'nt believe it so i did another 20 slurry 25 water stropped and it pulled even worse so i finished of shavette perma sharp blade. I then started posting on srp and bart recomrended i did 1oo laps on water only and to my surprismant the razor was shaving again. But not as sharp as i'd liked. Since then i relized my slurry was too thick and this did'nt help in fact it was dulling my good edge. so if i raize a slurry i always keep it very milky or even misty. since then i have brought several natural combos and there great for touching up and minor honing but from start to finish i get better edges if i stsrt with 4k/8k or 5k 8k naniwa. But you carn't beat the feel of the bbw/coti.

Thanked: 488Very true I noticed that after I cleaned this one up that it did appear to be a darker yellow than the newer ones. Denser concentration of Garnets maybe?
That may explain why this one using slurry cuts so well.

Thanked: 1262Bumping this thread because of all the good info in it.
Wondering if anyone is still playing with honing dry on the coti as part of a progression.
Maybe Slurry, water down slurry, dry, water, lather. Or something similiar.
Also, Has anyone honed many razors using the Ross Cutlery Method?

I didn't like the dry coti bit I tried, I'm extreamly happy with just plane water.
