I just discovered (or am discovering) the edge off of a green Escher. Thought the 12k Naniwa was a improvement off of the 8k but for me the Escher took it up at least the same amount from the 12k only with a velvety feeling. Have to admit i haven't got the exact same results off every razor I've used it on but i'm still learning.

I know some guys with go to a thuri after the synthetics. And thats what make them happy. And im willing to try this with all my naturals to see if its what im looking for. But it just sounds like a step back.

I feel (i dont know) that the 20k edge is very fine, thin, if you were to measure it. And what im thinking is to smooth out the microscopic ridges and valleys that are still in there. At least this is what im thinking i want. As from my understanding, this is what gives the more comfortable feel. I could be way off base on this.

Less 12k is not a bad idea and i will give it a try first before picking up the naturals.

I would say it will be... different. Particle shape and size is different, so you should expect to feel the difference on your face too. It is impossible to say whether “different” is good or bad for you, it depends on too many unknowns. You have to try it and see, there’s no other way.

I only suggested the strop because you said you were looking for the same keenness but more mellow... and the strop does that IMO.

it really depends on who is using the 20K ive had several guys do a 12k edge and it was harsh, my hone guy uses the same stone and its smooth,, I use it and its smooth, as smooth as an natural ive had on my razors. I had the 20k, its smooth, but I do find that some razors start micro chipping at too high a grit, like the 30k shapton, I have one razor that takes it well the rest, meh it needs to go back some. stick with it Jerry, you just need to learn how to max out and refine the edge with the stone you have, just read Glens signature quote, it says it all. if your good with your stones I don't care which you have, synthetic or naturals, big name or bargain basement, if the stone is of razor quality you will get a great edge. its in the hands of the honer.

also I agree if your stropping is dead on, it should mellow the keenness a little and smooth it out. guys like Glen can use a brick and give you a decent edge. Tc

Tc is spot on, it really is all down to the honer.

Jerry. Try a few laps on CroOx to see if that works.

I like CroOx on a felt hanging strop "after" stropping the ell out of the blade on linen (40) and leather (100). I only go to a 12K Naniwa and it makes for a nice comfortable edge. My guess it might just do the same after a 20K hone.

I’m with ocdshaver myself, soaps can make the world of difference! That aside, I always go a few laps now on the CroOx to give me that “smooth” that I like. Nom, nom.

I never come off the stones without a bit of CroOx and FeOx to calm the edge before going to leather. Shaving right off the stones is for some....

The perfect edge is one that the shaver finds perfect for their face. A comfortable close shave on a consistent basis! You don't need all these high end stones to achieve a perfect edge. However, to each his own. You get to choose your own satisfaction. Got to love it!
