Thanked: 13249I thought you had you had beat me to it hehehe
Some fun Ray, Thanks
I think for full discloser before anyone draws any conclusions off this test...
Rays personal finisher is a Coticule..
My goto finisher on most Sheffielders is a Coticule...
Again a very fun, unscientific test...Last edited by gssixgun; 06-02-2010 at 11:53 PM.

I caught this thread after the reveal, but still a great idea. I'm also very impressed Ray (Very close)!

Very very interesting. I've seen a few posts now suggesting that the Shaptons give a somewhat aggressive (my word, not that of others, but it's how I read it) edge, and it seems the general consensus on the coti's is that they are very smooth. Whoever's hand picked out that C12k, it must have been a very discerning hand indeed - matching a Naniwa 12k, no matter how many laps it takes (within reason, of course) is quite a feat.
Ray, I am very impressed by your "guesses" - I can hardly tell edges apart on my face...
But what I find the most interesting is that the different finishes from the various hones held up through the pasted stropping - that is not something I was expecting (though I have precious little experience with pastes, so it's not surprising to me that I'm wrong there).

I am glad I ended up prefering the coticule. Actually, my wallet is glad.
That Shapton 30k would probably give a killer edge on Ducks, TI's and any of the harder steel blades. Not really overly aggressive IMO, just like a diamond pasted edge.
I wonder what would happen if you gave the edge off the Shapton 30k a few licks on or coticule or escher, Glen?

Thanked: 13249Actually Ray I would give it some love on a linen / leather strop and see what happens on the next shave, first before going to any stone... shaving then stropping tends to settle in the blades off all stones... IME

Oddly enough I did just that back in April and posted about it here in a long ramble.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 16Glen/Ray: Did you/will you examine the edges under a microscope? I'd like to know how they compare at 200X, 400X, 500X. I'm getting set to do my own informal, unofficial experiment with my own razors. I'm going to do much the same in terms of stones and pastes, but I haven't ordered a 30K Shapton yet, and I just ordered a new microscope. I'm not that discerning a shaver, so I expect they will all feel pretty much the same to me. The only way I think I'll be able to tell the difference (If I can at all) is to view the edges microscopically. Nevertheless, I'm curious.

Thanked: 13249I did not use a microscope... I use a 40 x loupe right at the end of the honing session...
Don't take this wrong, but the pics and stuff you see are really cool, but it doesn't tell you anything about the shave, in fact after you strop they all pretty much look the same...
